NEVER ENOUGH TIME

While I have only been an occasional visitor to Washington, I was struck by one scene so strongly that it remains as somewhat of a reference. My first view "up close and personal" of the Pentagon was neither awe-inspiring nor intimidating. To be sure, I was impressed with the size of the building, but that was about it. What came upon me, and has stayed with me, is the image of an ant farm. An enormous one, surely, but an ant farm nonetheless.

So may passageways with so many ants constantly traveling them. Seeming endless streams of countless ants going and coming through the entrances. Since this view came on a grey, cold March morning, with barren trees and lingering winter, it seemed all the more depressing. I vowed then never to become one of those ants. I would not let myself be lost as one of the faceless, powerless, unknown minions of the "head ant" in the great farm. Not to mention the echo in my mind, that which is often considered a sarcastic oxymoron: "I'm from Washington, and I'm here to help."

Yet something else echoes in my mind. From the Christian Scriptures, the words of the Apostle Paul to the people of Colossae, chapter 4, verse 23: "Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord . . ." For it is then I remember that no matter how small or insignificant my work may seem to me or even to others, I am powerful and effective. My faith reminds me that I am known and loved by my God. More than that, as I do the work, I allow His love to flow through me. And then the work, the worker, and the workplace are transformed into something sacred and beautiful because God is there. No longer dark, dreary, and cold, but bright, cheerful, and warm is the workplace because God's work is being done. No longer nameless, faceless, and powerless, but known, loved, and empowered is the worker doing God's work. The work itself then, too, is transformed into an opportunity to share God's love and joy with others as we struggle to bring peace to His world.

SatCom Chris and I are sitting in the airport as he completes his mid-deployment leave and gets ready to fly back to Bagram.

I’ve shown him the threads and hope he can patch in sometime from the sand box. He says we would like Bagram this time of year. Generally over one hundred and no plant life.

His general coment about everything during leave is, “Its not Afghanistan”.

Here’s what’s in store for today —

BREAKING NEWS: Sunday could see repeat of Saturday night’s heavy rain, weather service says

SIERRA VISTA — A Saturday night storm dumped nearly 2 inches of rain at Fort Huachuca’s airport and possibly more in other areas of Cochise County, according to the National Weather Service.

But the weather service predicts that the highest threat of flash flooding could come today.

The Saturday night rains brought flash floods to some areas. Power was briefly out to some homes in the Sierra Vista area.

The weather service issued a flood advisory for Cochise County on Saturday night that was in effect until 3 a.m. on Sunday.

A hazardous weather outlook also was issued on Saturday, forecasting possible flash flooding on Sunday as the storm weakens and produces heavier rains. Monday is not expected to see those types of rains, the weather service said. And by Tuesday, a normal monsoon type of weather is forecast.

Saturday night’s storm blew into the county quickly, moving from east to west.

At the Bisbee Douglas International Airport, 1.2 inches of rain feel between 8:34 and 8:47 p.m., according to the weather service. Data from the airport after 9 p.m. was not available at the weather service’s Web site at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, so more rainfall may have been possible.

Winds gust of nearly 40 mph were recorded at the Bisbee Douglas airport during that timeframe.

At Libby Army Airfield on Fort Huachuca, 1.86 inches of rain was recorded between 7:25 p.m. on Saturday and 12:06 a.m. on Sunday.

Gusts of 51 mph were recorded at 9:56 p.m. at the fort airfield, according to the weather service. At 10:07 p.m., those gusts were measured at 44 mph, and at 10:32 p.m., no gusts were recorded at the airfield.

For more information on the weather in Cochise County and to watch for National Weather Service alerts, watch the Herald/Review Web site or go online to www.wrh.noaa.gov/twc/.

Actually, no, I think more likely it was the older generations, WWII and possibly even WWI, given my neighborhood. Granted, I have no way of knowing then.
