US to open 3.9m acres in Alaska for drilling
Financial Times ^ | July 16, 2008 | Sheila McNulty

The US federal government on Wednesday said it would open 3.9m acres of land in a designated petroleum reserve in Alaska for drilling as a means to help curb rising petrol prices.

“This is welcome news at a time when Americans are paying record prices at the pump,” said C. Stephen Allred, assistant US Secretary for Land and Minerals. “Together with proposed new production from other offshore and onshore areas, these increased supplies will help to stabilise energy costs.’’

The Alaska decision follows one by President George W. Bush on Monday to lift a presidential ban on drilling on the US outer continental shelf, off Florida. That decision still requires Congress to lift a separate ban on the area before the area can be leased for development.

But the Bureau of Land Management, an agency within the US Department of the Interior, said the Alaskan land that will now be offered requires no other approvals and will be up for leasing in the autumn.

Grease up the drill bits with baby seal fat and polar bear blubber and let 'em start turning to the right.

Watch oil prices continue to drop as the speculators run from a commodity that has promise of an increased supply.

A teleconference call with the media was scheduled for today @ 1:00 pm Eastern Time to announce a decision on the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska Supplemental Final Plan. (Source)

Assuming the teleconference was held as scheduled, the media has known about this for 10 hours.

The NYT's first and only online report is 2 hours old.

Yeah, I too wondered why they were using 'm'.

Well, they are journalists. More likely than not, they flunked 8th grade science class.

Thank you President Bush.
Most of the credit goes to President Bush. You know he is the dumb guy. Not smart enough to lead the country. An oil man who is single handedly responsible for high oil prices. At least according to the Democratic leadership.

For a dumb guy like they describe he sure turned the tables on them. By lifting the Presidential ban on offshore drilling.

Read this closely:
Before energy producers are permitted to explore offshore, however, Congress must lift their own legislative ban against drilling off the shores of California, Florida and Virginia that has been in place since 1981. Congress will have an opportunity to do so when it returns from August recess. The ban must be renewed each year and is scheduled to expire on September 30, unless Congress takes action to keep it in place.

Set to expire on September 30, 2008 Whether they let the ban expire or renew it. All eyes will be on the Dems. They have blocked oil production for the last thirty years. Congratulations President Bush once again you have outfoxed all of those people who are smarter than you.

[”.. a designated petroleum reserve...”]

Seems like it was already dedicated for drilling, so what's the big deal? Additional approvals were needed to drill in the dedicated drilling area? Only in government. At any rate, the EnviroMarxistst will file 15,000 lawsuits by 8:05 am tomorrow morning.

Well offshore drilling law sunsets in September, I don't know any of this is part off it, but the Dems have rider(s) hidden in some legistlation not related to energy that will revive the offshore drilling ban. The Dems are cowards for not writing a stand alone bill for an up and down vote. Anyway, it looks primed for a Bush veto. So you can say goodbye to the offshore drilling ban. :-)
