Scare Tactic — Obama Slams Muslim Portrayal By: Mike Allen

The Obama campaign is condemning as “tasteless and offensive” a New Yorker magazine cover that depicts Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) in a turban, fist-bumping his gun-slinging wife.

An American flag burns in their fireplace.

The New Yorker says it's satire. It certainly will be candy for cable news.

The Obama campaign quickly condemned the rendering. Spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement: “The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree."

The issue, which goes on sale Monday, includes a long piece by Ryan Lizza about Obama’s start in Chicago politics.

At a press availability Sunday afternoon in San Diego, Senator Obama was asked, according to a transcript by Maria Gavrilovic of CBS News: “The upcoming issue of the New Yorker, the July 21st issue, has a picture of you, depicting you and your wife on the cover.

“Have you seen it? If not, I can show it to you on my computer. It shows your wife Michelle with an Afro and an AK 47 and the two of you doing the fist bump with you in a sort of turban-type thing on top. I wondered if you’ve seen it or if you want to see it or if you have a response to it?”

Obama, shrugging incredulously: “I have no response to that.”

Can you get to the internet from a Mac? I just figured there was some proprietary iNet or something like that with Webpages you can buy for like $0.99...

I wrote this on another thread, it's equally true on this one:

I truly cannot believe how many people on this thread actually think this is a hard-hitting depiction and either a) feel sorry for Obama or b) think this is the work of HRC's people behind the scenes or c) Think the New Yorker has somehow "come to its senses."

Please get with it.

The advert, profile, focus group, and image people working for Obama live and usually work within walking distance of the cartoonists, writers and editors for the New Yorker. They go to the same parties and have drinks (and sex) with each others wives and/or boyfriends. This cartoon is part of the makeover Obama is currently enjoying by virtue of his -- completely unchallenged -- move to the center. This cover will generate gazillions of dollars in free publicity and was undoubtedly timed to go on sale and was thoroughly vetted and coordinated by Obama's people. The best thing you could do is ignore it. It's not a cheap shot at Obama. It's the furthest thing from that. It's also not simply making fun of people like us. It's an attempt to draw the uncommitted into the "kewl kidz kamp" by getting them to identify with how ridiculous it is to portray these nice middle American folks as leftists or race baiters.

It's all part of the BIG SHOW.

Obama is the "King of Flattering Magazine Covers".

His humorless response demonstrates that he is taking himself way too seriously. Maybe he should call Dr. Phil...

Your line of thinking suits me better.

Look for the Clinton Machine to be behind this.

Maybe a lot of Super Delegates see the New Yorker cover?

As a Republican, I would have to be the one to point that out. Let's remember the lesson of 1998: that liberal women are so awful in the sack that liberal men don't even know what sex is (or even what "is" is for that matter) when they've had it.

One thing for sure.

The degree of success of this issue will tell us a lot more than any weekly poll.

The resulting conversation is the ultimate product survey, IMO.

I hope you are kidding? If not then there really is little difference you just enter your protocols from your ISP and all is the same except no viruses. :)

And one more thing.

This puts John McCain and the entire GOP Congress on the spot when they’re asked to respond to it.

Somebody’s video better damned well have crossed fingers in it...as they ‘repudiate’ it.

There's nothing counter-intuitive about it. You don't realize how concentrated BHO's image consultants and their friends in the media are on the island of Manhattan. This is not an attack by any means.
