THE NEW YORK TIMES VS. HELMS, PART 529,876

Last Friday, on the Fourth of July, the great American patriot Jesse Helms passed away. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson also went to their great reward on Independence Day, so this is further proof of God.
Helms is now the second great American patriot I've always wanted to meet and never will, at least in this lifetime. The only other one is the magnificent Reagan aide Lyn Nofziger. (Wikipedia quote: "I sometimes lie awake at night trying to think of something funny that Richard Nixon said.")
After a week of hundreds of Helms obituaries -- one or two of which were not completely dishonest -- I will mention just a few items that were not addressed or given sufficient attention.
The two most obsessively discussed topics among Senate staffers are: (1) Who is the stupidest senator? (Sen. Barbara Boxer pulled into the lead when Sen. Lincoln Chafee retired), and (2) which senators are beastly and which are wonderful to their staff?
When I worked in the Senate in the '90s, the two senators famous for being absolute princes to work for were Sen. Helms and -- it pains me to tell you this, so you know it has to be true -- Sen. Teddy Kennedy. (He was so nice to his staffers, he frequently offered them rides home in his car after parties.)
I never knew -- and you never knew, unless you read one of the two honest obituaries this past week -- that in 1962 Helms and his wife "Dot" adopted a 9-year-old orphan with cerebral palsy. They already had two daughters and Helms was 41 years old at the time. But it was Christmastime and they read about Charlie in a newspaper. He said all he wanted for Christmas was a mother and father.
In the 1976 North Carolina Republican primary, Helms engineered Ronald Reagan's upset victory over Gerald Ford, the sitting president. That victory carried Reagan to the convention and made him the front-runner in 1980. The night Reagan won the 1980 presidential election, Helms famously uttered the beautiful words: "God has given America one more chance."

You're preaching to the choir. He is the worst GOP candidate of my lifetime, and I am getting long in the tooth. I was raised by political activists and I know my way around GOP Headquarters. I know how things work. I was absolutely horrified when McCain pulled that Florida victory off. The way the primaries were front-loaded killed off any chance of anyone stopping him, especially after Rudy threw his support behind McCain and he and Huckabee formed their alliance.
I have known all about John McCain from day one and fully understand the situation. I am not voting for McCain; I am voting against Obama. I know the arguments inside out. I am doing what I believe is the correct thing to do. You won't be able to convince me to do otherwise.
My only hope is that McCain is self-serving enough to choose a strong VP and lacks his maternal longevity genes. No one thinks less of McCain as a candidate than do I but we are at war with Islamic Fascists and I refuse to vote against the United States of America. I will not provide aid and comfort to the enemy. I will reluctantly do my duty and vote against Obama.

Helms was viciously and falsely portrayed as a racist -- including in the totally objective New York Times obituary last week. In January 1963, a decade before Helms would run for office, he editorialized about Harvey Gantt, the first black student to be admitted to Clemson University in South Carolina.The MSM is so out of it. They just cannot appreciate a person like Helms who dedicated his life and career to making out country a better place.
Helms praised Gantt to the skies, saying he had "stoutly resisted the pose of a conquering hero" and had "turned away from the liberal press and television networks which would glorify him." Gantt, Helms said, just wanted to be an architect and "Clemson is the only college in South Carolina that can teach him how to be one."
Funny how that little tidbit didn't make the Times obituary. They must have cut it for "space."

Lyn was part of Reagan's Kitchen Cabinet. Those of us from Bakersfield were extremely proud of him. He was like a Ross MacDonald character. Very smart, rumpled suit, biting wit and a big fan of telling it like it was. I wish Ann would have met Lyn. They could have had an awesome baby. Of course Lyn's wife Bonnie might not have been too keen on the idea
Another Bakersfield hero no longer with us is Joe Shell, a state assembly man who ran against Nixon in the 1962 California gubernatorial primary, thus robbing us of a Republican Governor but leading to the election of Ronald Reagan in 1966 and ultimately altering history in a way that is impossible to over-state. Joe died a few months ago; Lyn in 2006. These were the men who inspired me as a pre-voting budding political junkie in the 1960s and 1970s. It is so easy for me to get misty eyed over the loss of Jesse Helms. Like Lyn Nofziger and Joe Shell, Helms was an icon. I look around the field hoping to see someone who can "touch the books they've read". They just don't make guys like them any more.

Yeah, that Helms, he really was a racist.
Both of the local fishwraps here—the Durham Herald-Sun and the Raleigh News and Observer—played up the “Helms never repudiated racism” angle, multiple times, in their coverage leading up to his funeral yesterday. It was absolutely disgusting.
