Junior's, Magnolia and other top bakeries over new trans fat limit (Bloomberg's New York)

New York is having a cannoli conundrum.

The shell-encased treats at two of the city's top bakeries tested well above the Health Department's trans-fat limit that went into effect Tuesday, according to lab results commissioned by the Daily News.

Veniero's, the popular East Village eatery where one cannoli contained trans-fat levels four times above the city limit, vowed Friday to pull the shells from the shelves until the supplier it deals with bans the bad-for-you fat.

"I want to thank you for alerting me," owner Robert Zerilli said.

Veniero's wasn't alone.

The taboo fat was also found in a cannoli at Ferrara's in Little Italy, a chocolate cupcake at Magnolia Bakery in Greenwich Village, a croissant at Sarabeth's on the upper West Side and a strawberry cheesecake at Junior's in Brooklyn.

"I'm blown away by this," said Ernesto Lepore, president of Ferrara's. "I don't understand why trans fat is turning up."

Has anybody ever tried to oppose the law in court?

If the cannoli has 4x the allowed amount, then just declare that there are 4 serving in the cannoli. Presto instant compliance. Meanwhile, this should be fought in court. I can’t believe that the State is now telling you what you are allowed to eat.

Who cares? If you can't have a cannoli or piece of Junior's cheesecake, because some politician says it's bad for you, then it's time for another Tea Party.

Screw them.!!!

"I can’t believe that the State is now telling you what you are allowed to eat."

Health boards have the power of God to do what they want, and the citizens can do nothing about it.

Bloomberg's nannies watch not only guns but monitor transfat content in New York foods. I kid you not!

Artificial trans fats, found in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils are very unhealthy.

However some natural trans fats, such as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which are naturally found in beef and dairy, are very healthy. Could hese cannolis possibly be chock full of healthy CLA? Could be.

Some time ago, during once of the tax debates in TN - or maybe it was FL, I forget - a bunch of pranksters pulled down the state flag from off of the state house, and ran up a big green flag with a banana on it.

The food police - and in England they just mandated how many holes some restaurants can have in their salt shakers.

It isn't the governments place to decide what we can/can't eat.

Their place is to inform - and people to take responsibility for themselves.

There needs to be, for example, a major education blitz on High Fructose Corn Syrup = far far more fattening than sugar. Try to find soda, candy, canned fruits, jams and jellies - etc etc - without it...

But it's up to the consumers to be aware and push the market to comply.

When enough people stop buying a product or start buying an alternative - the market corrects itself.

Take, for example, organic foods. The big supermarkets saw millions of $$$ going elsewhere...now they all have organics,,,

1 in 4 people in NYC have herpes, and they’re worried about cannoli? Doesn’t the Health Department have anything better to do?

I agree totally. Can we go back to butter, please.

When everyone was crowing about how THEY were getting rid of transfats (I believe we know these by the name of margarine), I asked someone behind a counter what they were using instead of "trans-fats". I got no answer. I would really like to know what they are using now, and how it is healthier for me than my Saffola margarine.

I have noticed a definite difference in the taste and texture of bakery stuff (and even the fried chicken from our local grocery store - no trans fat) since they stopped using trans-fats.

The replacement of sugar with corn syrup forever ruined the taste of soda. Now that corn prices have gone through the roof, with Coke and Pepsi scrap the poison that is corn syrup?
