I agree with this charge. I have been hit in the head more than once by someone rudely trying to stuff an oversized carryon into an overhead compartment.
Nickel and dime you where you are coming and going !

World to you: If you’re not rich go to hell.
I will I will I think I think.
it seems these gals are awefully repetitive it seems. :P
It makes their job a lot easier if your right to personal baggage is severely restricted.
And now they get to cut out meal service and drink carts too.
This week the foreign exchange group that I am with flew our students home from their year in the U.S.. Most of our students were forced to pay up to $150 overage fees for their luggage. This is really a problem for many travelers.
I’m all for limiting carry on baggage.
But when airlines do dumbass things like charge $15 bucks a bag, then what do they expect to happen?
All they are doing is pushing the problem (of transporting bags) somewhere else.
As a heavy business traveler (and paying usually the highest fares), I avoid American Airlines now. I’m tired of getting dealing with the overheads fillup and the longer TSA lines(in terminals exclusively American) as a result
When I last flkew on Memorial Day weekend, some guy was trying to stuff his bag in the overhead. He was doing everything he could to get it in and the overhead closed. Finally the stewardess squeezed by us all ( yumm ) and took the bag to be stored in baggage. The guy was griping but she wan’t putting up with it.
On the one hand, you know airlines as a group have had the bag charge idea on the books for years, just waiting for a reason to implement it. American is leading them all, but if they pull it off, all major hub airlines might eventually follow.
On the other, they really are experiencing huge cost increases due to fuel costs, and have to make the money up somewhere. This model allows them to avoid raising actual ticket prices, though with 2 bags round trip being 80 bucks, this might be argued to be deceptive in terms of overall cost to the traveler.
I’m really torn on this one.
On the one hand, I oppose additional fees of any kind.
On the other hand I really, really want the airlines to enforce the carry-on size rules.
My 85 yr old MIL is flying today, she told my son who is with her that there was an extra 500 dollar charge on overweight luggage! LOL
My son told her that if that was the case, they’d only take a few things and buy new stuff when they got there.
Awwwwwwww.......poor widddle babies.
I can’t stand people who get around checking their bags by using huge carry-ons anyway.
I’m talkin’ about YOU, Mr. America. That bag that has 10 days of vacation clothes....that’s not a carry-on.
Those folks fussing about the extra charge are gonna have to just suck it up! It’s annoying having to deal with their oversized carry ons. If it doesn’t fit the box they have at the check-in desk, it shouldn’t be brought on. There is only so much overhead storage, and each passenger should be able to put his or her bag in the overhead, if they have one, without the space being taken up by someone else’s giant bag.
It’s all about the price of jet fuel; hence, it’s all about weight. Weight is weight, whether it’s checked baggage, carry-on baggage, or passengers.
If it were up to me, I’d weigh each passenger and his/her luggage (checked or carry-on), and base the ticket price on total weight. Some sort of volume restrictions would be needed as well (you can’t let passengers bring 10-foot cubical boxes, even empty), but weight should be the primary determinant.
My boss just got back from a vacation and said the baggage fee for checked bags just had everyone carrying on instead. It slowed down boarding and delayed their flights.
If they are serious about the baggage fee they have to do something about oversized carry-ons.
All the theft in the airlines could be stopped in 24 hours if they video taped the back area, searched the thieves...er employees in baggage, handling, TSA and stealing and prosecuted thieves under FEDERAL law with minimum mandatory of 10 years with 15 years for theft greater than $1000.
I avoid flying as much as possible now. If it's more than a 10 hour drive I'll fly, otherwise why bother with the hassle.
