Abortion, Divorce, Euthanasia (that would be death with dignity)... They got the whole damned thing called life pretty much surrounded... all with excellent rational reasons of course... which can all fall under the heading of “Mental Cruelty”
Well not my Church. What was it that Chesterton said?
Well this is a brutal paraphrase but: “On the one side you have a marble statue and on the other an ice statue in all ways identical, practically indistinguishable... except with the sacramentalism gone - in time - rather mercilessly dependent on the weather.
Now those Churches that caved in, are talking about “schisms”... but they’re only squabbles.
I don't think the issue is which church, but whether the participants have a traditional, rather than a liberal, view of life.
As stated by other posters, it is the traditional Catholics, Evangelicals, Orthodox Jews, Mormans that are producing large families in the Western world.
The problem is *not* that people don’t want children, it is that a combination of expensive nanny government and culture make children far too expensive and difficult to have.
The recipe for children is easy. First things is that the parents must have the energy and time to have children. This means that the father isn’t worked to death, and ideally, the mother is a homemaker, and is not employed outside of the home.
In turn, this also means that taxes must be low enough for married couples to do this. Married couples should have lower taxes, married couples with children should have very low or even no taxes. It is a fair exchange for the wife refraining from work.
At the government level, this does imply several things. First, they much encourage a type of work for husbands that encourages them to have children. Second, young married families need housing areas that are “child-centric”, excluding people who are not likely to reproduce, criminals, prostitutes, and other “interferers”.
Birth control must be removed, and abortion prohibited except when pregnancy is life threatening. OB/GYN and fertility services should be readily available.
In major nations, this is important enough to build new cities specifically for breeding, or gentrify a large area of an existing city just for that purpose. Patriotism, marriage and family *will* be taught in school as part of the regular curriculum.
Parents should be strongly supported by churches that emphasize having children, which are doctrines in most churches, yet are rarely emphasized. Most religions would be amiable to doing this.
Finally, parents should have near total authority over their own children, with little or no government interference.
They have two, a boy and a girl.
One of these days, I will loose my composure and ram my size 11 shoe down some ones throat.
Four kids, 2 grandchildren so far.
Something like that, yeah. We’d probably never get to the point Starship Troopers was, since there would be some strong opposition to some of the other social structures that made the Citizen/resident dichotomy possible. I haven’t seen ID4 in a while, so I forget the specific reference there (though I can guess).
Actually, the whole thing stems from my applying for a Desert Storm plate here in TX, and thinking about how vets shouldn’t have to pay the full registration price for a legitimate vet plate as a small way that the state could be making good on the whole “we owe our soldiers a debt etc etc...” thing. It just kinda snowballed.
Yeah, but you're probably French-Canadien, and don't know any better ................ FRegards

“Better to have the freedom, and the cash, to jet to Paris for the weekend than push a kid on some dumb swing.”
I pushed a 2 year old in a swing only yesterday and immensely enjoyed his babyish “WEEEEE!” when I pushed. His 9 month old brother enjoyed just sitting in my lap in the swing in the yard until he got tired and fell asleep.
I notice the Turks seem to have a good balance down. I’ve only had one bad experience with any Turk, and that’s because he was a bigtime lib and not really related to his culture of origin.
I think living in that climate, and between two warring cultures, has raised a sort of cautious indifference to the extrema on either side and an emphasis on harmony and productiveness. Kinda like the Swiss, or the Belgians.
There's a brilliant idea. I nominate you to go to Riyadh and try to promote freedom of religion. See how far it gets you.
Disappearing babies? Personally, Rabbi Shmuley, I blame Michael Moore.
My maternal great grandparents had 11 children and nine of them lived to adulthood. I am here on this earth thanks to a big family.
Very true indeed.
“Some people, upon learning this say things like Well you will be happier or It is better for the environment anyway.”
I have noticed lately that lots of people, upon hearing someone’s disappointment, feel the need to insert their own judgment or perspective into someone else’s situation.
Not that I’ve had anything as tough as having trouble conceiving, but in a comparable situation all I need to hear from someone is “that sucks” or “I’m sorry” or “let me know if I can do anything.” They may think their suggestions are helping - they’re not, they are inserting their own viewpoints into a problem that isn’t theirs.
Well met.
Let me how this plays out - I'll be over here in this hardened bunker, wearing my flak vest and helmet...
