John McCain Looks to French Model
Der Spiegel Online ^ | 06/30/2008 | John Carey

John McCain says new plants can help solve the energy crisis and address climate change. It's not that simple.

To power America's future, Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) has an energy plan with a distinctly French accent. "The French are able to generate 80 percent of their electricity with nuclear power," the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee points out. "There's no reason why America shouldn't." In a mid-June speech, part of a continuing blitz on energy issues, McCain laid out his vision for 100 new nuclear plants -- 45 of them to be built by 2030. They would help meet America's energy needs, and because nukes don't emit greenhouse gases, they would fight global warming as well. McCain also wants to borrow from the French playbook by reprocessing and reusing spent nuclear fuel and by providing government incentives to get all this done. Nukes now produce 20 percent of US electricity, says McCain senior policy adviser Douglas J. Holtz-Eakin: "To move north of that, we have to be aggressive."

“There’s no reason why America shouldn’t.”

It isn’t that we can’t, it is because the bureaucratic nightmare that has been placed over the NRC allows them to arbitrarily order repeated re-engineering of the plants MANY TIMES before it is built.

The goofy regulations also force replacement of obsolete malfunctioning instruments with equally the exact model number, regardless of the age of the equipment, unless that instrument is just no longer available in which case it the plant is forced to spends tens of thousands of dollars approving of a newer model, in spite of that instruments use in tens of thousands of other applications.

Nuclear power is not the only thing McCain eyes on the French model. Immigration, and economic policy also copies the French model, and will have exactly the same success, 10%+ unemployment, and rampant rioting as the underclass seeks to overthrow the native population. Look at the State of France, and see our future.

The French did it right.Their Nuclear Plants are all identical, sharing the same parts, skill sets, & operating standards - thereby cheaper & safer to operate

Well, I’m not a Friend of McCain, but on this issue he is absolutely right.

We need to start building nuclear plants as soon as possible and as fast as possible and as many as possible.

And we need to reverse Jimmy Carter’s idiot rules about nuclear waste disposal. It is not widely realized that the necessity to bury all those highly radioactive, long-lived waste products is entirely Carter’s doing. Most of it, including the most radioactive and longest-lived stuff, can be recycled, once you repeal the government mandates.
