But just months later, with Washington sweltering in humidity, the hawkish immigration reformer, who wants to deport the nation's 12 million illegal immigrants, has declared his support for McCain. "I expect to be supporting him in November," Tancredo told TIME last week. "But certainly it is not set in stone."
But in public comments, McCain often delivered a somewhat mixed message of his own. He continued to favor all the parts of his comprehensive plan â border security, increased employer sanctions for illegal hiring and a path to citizenship for the undocumented â but he mostly refrained from using the word "comprehensive." Instead, he spoke of a two-stage solution. First, he would secure the borders, a process that would be certified by border state governors. Then he would push for a process to allow the 12 million undocumented immigrants to become full citizens.
And the fact that an immigration hardliner like Tancredo plans to pull the lever for McCain suggests that the Republican immigration backlash he threatens may not materialize this fall.

It’s no dance. He supports amnesty as does his pal Ted Kennedy.
And waht kind of “immigration reform” do you think Obama has in mind?
Did you note that even Tancredo declared his support for McCain? He is facing reality. Time that everyone else does too.
I do not accept that a so-called 'conservative' would. Then again, McCain's the 4th most liberal Republican in the senate. So it really doesn't come as much of a surprise.
AMNESTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He may facing reality, but I can’t help but wonder if he feels like he just sold his soul.
Obama will have opposition to his plan. McCain will have both parties backing his.
It’s time that Conservatives told the Republican party to go pound sand. If we were unified on this, McCain would not be our standard bearer after the convention. The message would be telegraphed that they wouldn’t get on single vote for McCain.
Instead our ‘Conservative’ brain trusts telegraph the Republican party that ‘yes you can’ get your guy elected without Conservatives.
It’s just amazing the damage some ‘Conservatives’ are willing to wreak on the Conservative cause. There isn’t a poker player among you.
> Did you note that even Tancredo declared his support for McCain? He is facing reality. Time that everyone else does too.
Tancredo is probably being strongarmed by the GOP, threatening to leave him high and dry on funding come election time, just as they abandoned great conservatives in favor of RINOs in state primaries.
I’m not pulling for Obama, but everything McCain has been saying lately just makes me sick to my stomach. It is clear he has contempt for conservative values like border security. His fingers are itching to make deals with Dims. It’s going to take more than a clothespin on my nose to actively vote for McCain this fall, rather than leave the presidential selection blank (or with a write-in).
This is the first time I have not contributed money to a presidential campaign. I’m putting the money to better use: filling up my gas tank. I’m enjoying this now while it lasts, before either eco-warrior McCain or socialist Obama can grab my wallet to pay for carbon credits.
“. If we were unified on this, McCain would not be our standard bearer after the convention”
Bears repeating.
“everything McCain has been saying lately just makes me sick to my stomach.”
I wouldn’t agree with “everything”, but I have a lot of things that I wish he would say differently. But then I listen to Obama for about 4 minutes ( that’s my limit) and send McCain some money. Do you have any idea what an Obama presidency will cost the country and us, individually?
As I said on another thread:
The point that many ignore is that there are say 10 top issues, and we disagree with McCain on 2-3 strongly, another 2-3 somewhat and actually agree on the other 5.
But we all disagree extremely strongly on all 10 with Obama, whose immigration reform will consist of giving citizenship to illegals, not securing the border, surrender to the terrorists, turn the US into a socialist country by increasing the taxes so nobody will be able to invest, pushing socialized medicine down our throat which will bankrupt the country, while NOT providing medical care, because it will be rationed â not to mention stuff the courts full of leftist activist judges.
People need to see that there are only TWO choices: McCain or Obama â conervatives voting third party are only helping Obama. These are the facts.
If Tommy wants to leave the party to do some good, there is no better time than now. This dirty dancing routine with the RINO relic will cost him credibility on this issue. And IMHO as a politician Tommy be a one trick pony and he is a nobody without the illegal immigration issue.
You are ignoring the first part of the statement.
“I expect to be supporting him in November,” Tancredo told TIME last week”
btt
The only way to vote for McCain is to put him on a short leash. We MUST at whatever cost take back either the house, the senate or both. No matter who gets elected he needs to be neutered to prevent them from doing permanent damage to the country.
What's the weather like on that planet you live on?
McCain is the nominee because more Republicans voted for him than any other candidate. Not by just a little, but massively. The people at the convention are going to be mostly McCain's elected delegates. If you want a party standard bearer who shares your beleifs you have to convice a plurality (at least) of your fellow party members to vote for him. Unlected party hacks ignoring the will of the majority of voters and voting for their ideological favorite is what Democrats do.
You know what AuntB, I am so sick and tired of folks who can’t tell a leftist from a Conservative, that I actually ask myself what forum I’m on these days.
You can print out McCain’s history for folks, they can read it, and then they turn right around and say, “That isn’t fair!”, Obama, Obama, Obama, Obama... You’d think you had a mother duck whose chicks had just gotten lost. Quack, Quack, Quack, Quack... And this washes McCain clean? Well, no, it doesn’t, but I want him. He’s a Conservative.
Welcome to the special Election Edition of the Twilight Zone.
It’s a tag team match to November. One ass or another is going to destroy this nation after that, and some folks here are desperate to make sure it’s our ass. Someone besides us will have his reins, but we must put him in the position so they can drive him.
Talk about a sucker every minute, it’s more like ten thosand suckers every minute these days. And they all have a big (R) after their name. “Look at my shiney (R) folks. I’m so proud. I get to vote this fall. Oh boy. I’m a bog boy/girl now.”
And so it goes. Sorry George. Sorry Thomas. Sorry John. Obama was out there in the toolies, we had to support the party over the nation. We’ve got this shiney (R) and we’re duty bound.
Who cares if the other guy would have opposition and our guy won’t. At least he’s our guy. And besides, he’s got a shiney (R) just like mine. See... here’s my (R), and I get a gold star if I vote for a guy with a decades long history that sucks. Can’t wait until November.
Happy as a clam in mud aren’t you Hugin.
Well, I’m not. And you can call me anything you like, because it won’t cause me to vote for the likes of John McCain. And if the whole party wants to march down the leftist turnpike to support him, you folks have a great time.
I won’t be joining you, and I won’t be alone.
It may not cost McCain the election, but it will cost the party a considerable amount of support in the future. The party is losing people it will never get back.
