Jindal watches goodwill evaporate (JindalWatch® Alert)
Times Picayune ^ | June 29, 2008 | Stephanie Grace

Posted on 06/29/2008 12:40:56 AM PDT by abb

Of this, there can be no dispute: Gov. Bobby Jindal's honeymoon is over.

The consensus at home is that Jindal lost his luster by declining to veto the Legislature's lavish pay raise. But Jindal is also playing to a national audience these days, and on that front, he's taking a different sort of hit.

While Louisiana voters are up in arms over the revelation that Jindal is not above cutting political deals, the deal killer elsewhere in the country could be an unrelated bill that he signed last week, state Sen. Ben Nevers' "Louisiana Science Education Act."

If you ask me, these were about the two dumbest ways Jindal could have started out his term as governor.

Even I, as someone who isn’t at all opposed to approaching several different views on man’s origin, am a bit leary of the intentions of some of these intelligent design curriculums. I wouldn’t so much oppose this as wish Jindal had done it in the middle of his term. As such, I think he’s sent the wrong vibe in several directions.

This is the kind of move I’d expect from Huckabee—not the rising star of the Republican party.

Unfortunately, being a Republican in a Southern state like LA demands dealing with meaningless yet divisive issues like ID, which plays right into the yahoo characatures we're all familiar with in the national media.

All this is very avaoidable, but pandering knows no party.

Oh, I know. I grew up in and live in Tennessee at the moment.

Thing is, I think ID and evolution are both quite meaningful discussions and both worthy of consideration. These should be lively discussions that cross both scientific, philosophic, spiritual, and humanitarian boundaries into genuine discussion. What makes it so difficult is that those with the loudest voices all too often want to push the other side off the cliff.

You have IDers who want nary a mention of Darwin, and you have the obnoxious Darwinists with their dumb fish-turtles on their cars.

You’re right, all of this is avoidable. And Jindal could have side-stepped it all with a bit more fancy footwork. As it stands, I think he’s wounded himself dearly after what was a very promising start.

I skip right over the debate and state clearly that the Federal Government has no business in education. The quicker American children get out of these indoctrination centers, the better off we are all going to be.

In regard to Jindal; I don’t see either the pay raise or this bill as a big deal. The whole evolution argument has grown old with me. In the end it is a worthless theory and how much of it is right or wrong makes no real difference that I was ever able to discern. I am sure there are others who would beg to differ, but I am speaking from a purely personal perspective. Knowing or not knowing the theory is all the same to me.

Legislators can either be paid by salary, or else they will assuredly find a way to pay themselves by bribery and corruption.

The proposed salary that Governor Jindal promised to sign into law, $70,000 per year, does not seem excessive to me. Poor Bobby Jindal is now probably wondering why he bothered to run for Governor of such a place.

This is a state that traditionally pays their normally non-wealthy public officials a pittance, and then winks at the bribery that is rampant there. A state where policemen have, on occasion, supplemented their meager salaries by moonlighting as hit men does not seem to have a problem of overpaid public officials.

"Jindal lost his luster by declining to veto the Legislature's lavish pay raise"

Wow, I guess $16,800/year is considered good pay for a state legislator in LA? What's that, $8.00 an hour? I made more than that 30 years ago as a part time cook! Yeah, RECALL THE IDIOT! Let's get some real (DEMOCRAT) leadership in there!

Their total pay is closer to 36K per year, counting their perdiem, expense account and benefits. And it is a part-time job.

It’s all here.

Wow! The fury of an abused 100% perfect non compromising straight ahead at all costs with blinders conservative has caused some deviation in common sense thought processes. Get over it. Many hair dressers make over $80,000/ yr. I know, they probably have more brains than the LA elite.

But, ya deal with the hand you are dealt. Work with to change it; not kill it.

$16,800 pay is the base salary. They receive a per diem of $143, a $500 per per month unreimbursed expense allowance, office staff is paid, mileage reimbursement, extremely inexpensive housing in Baton Rouge in state-owned buildings and many other perquisites. The job is a part time job that the legislators have themselves transformed into near full time. They file excessive legislation to earmark funds for organizations owned or operated by friends. These organizations, nor the state, are not required to provide information on the owners/operators of the organizations NOR are they required to say what the money will be used for or account for the moneys use. The legislators file and debate useless, pandering and self-serving legislation. Our legislators, who are soooo stressed with lack of time, have given us an official state amphibian, two state jellies, state song, state marching song, state dog, and so many official state “things’ that they would fill a book the size of the NYC phone book. There is absolutely no need for 90% of the bills filed. The voters of Louisiana are tired of the line of bullshit from politicians. They state “we are flush with money” (which, by the way is mostly nonrecurring), yet postpone giving tax breaks, give themselves immediate, perpetual yearly raises. What pisses me off the most is that several legislators stated the reason that they need the raise is because the recently passed ethics legislation will force them to stop doing business with the state. ... so they need to make up the money some way. State legislators may or may not be wealthy when they become legislators but the majority of them are excessively (beyond logical expectations and legal means) when they leave the legislature. Jindal was supposed to clean up this mess. Instead he is allowing himself to be held hostage. Jindal is very intelligent...I can only explain his behavior as due to lack of experience in working with criminals. If he doesn’t veto the pay raise...he’s toast.
