Unfortunately, being a Republican in a Southern state like LA demands dealing with meaningless yet divisive issues like ID, which plays right into the yahoo characatures we're all familiar with in the national media.

All this is very avaoidable, but pandering knows no party.

Oh, I know. I grew up in and live in Tennessee at the moment.

Thing is, I think ID and evolution are both quite meaningful discussions and both worthy of consideration. These should be lively discussions that cross both scientific, philosophic, spiritual, and humanitarian boundaries into genuine discussion. What makes it so difficult is that those with the loudest voices all too often want to push the other side off the cliff.

You have IDers who want nary a mention of Darwin, and you have the obnoxious Darwinists with their dumb fish-turtles on their cars.

You’re right, all of this is avoidable. And Jindal could have side-stepped it all with a bit more fancy footwork. As it stands, I think he’s wounded himself dearly after what was a very promising start.
