BELGRADE (Reuters Life!) - A fragment of a human jaw found in Serbia and believed to be up to 250,000 years old is helping anthropologists piece together the story of prehistoric human migration from Africa to Europe.
"This is the earliest evidence we have of humans in the area," Canada's Winnipeg University anthropology professor Mirjana Roksandic told Reuters.
The fragment of a lower jaw, complete with three teeth, was discovered in a small cave in the Sicevo gorge in south Serbia.
"It is a pre-Neanderthal jaw that we believe is between 130,000 to 250,000 years old," said Belgrade University archaeology professor Dusan Mihailovic, head of the team studying the jaw.
"It could help us explain better the human evolution and implications of movements of the population and culture across a large territory," he said.
Anthropologists believe Africa was the birthplace of man, who then migrated northwards into the Middle East and Europe, possibly in reaction to climate changes.
During the periodic ice ages northern Europe would have been covered in ice, so the theory is these early humans stayed in the easier climate of southern Europe.
The jaw might belong to homo erectus, the first type of human to walk upright, who appeared in Africa 1.8 million years ago and was the precursor of both modern man, or homo sapiens, and the separate species of Neanderthal man.

Also, I thought there was a thread out here recently about Neanderthals interbreeding with Homo Sapiens, and Homo Sapiens eventually took over the human population.

Knowing this, I'd say that this ancient human was from the Kensington section of Philadelphia..
And now they are the haven for Mohammedan thugs...at least the Neanderthals were peaceful.

Actually there are those that say we are Homo Erectus, the one full skeleton they have(a boy) is consistant with Homo Sapiens. Skull dimensions are slightly smaller inside but other wise quite close to homo sapiens, Of course they don’t like to admit it but there you go.

Yes I could but since I have been drinking this afternoon I am fairly sure I couldn’t come up with it. Do a google on Homo Erectus, it will surely show you the boy. He was judged to be a modern human and would have obtained a full grown height of 6 feet.

Sorry, but the data does not prove Turkana boy is not Homo Sapiens. It merely proves that evos will claim what they want and to he** with the evidence.
Given a choice between scientists who have studied the data for decades vs. creationists who have ignored and denied the data, I'll go with the scientists.
Creationists' belief has interfered with their ability to learn and to judge the data.
By the way, I have seen a lot of the data. I studied the subject in grad school. I handled the casts, generally for hours, I studied anatomy and osteology and a lot of related subjects.
That sure beats staying at a Holiday Inn Express and reading a creationist website.
