In the meeting, attendees said McCain promised that, if elected, Congress would pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

Dump McCain at the convention, draft Duncan Hunter! If people were really serious about saving our country.

I guess the question is whether the Dems and the President could really get away with this without starting a civil war. I think that one of the reasons it took so long to bring them to task last time was that the anti-immigration forces did not realize what was happening until well into the process, and even then, they were not well organized. Such will not be the case next time. If the feds try to do an amnesty over the objections of the American people, they won’t be able to do it without being noticed, and the folks who finally forced them to clamp down on the border will be ready to go after them.

If the Congress and President decide to do it anyway, though, there is nothing the people can do to stop them except either vote them out, which raises a timing problem, or load their guns and gird for street battles.

“”He’s one John McCain in front of white Republicans. And he’s a different John McCain in front of Hispanics,” complained Rosanna Pulido, a Hispanic and conservative Republican who attended the meeting.”

A real ‘uniter’ isn’t he?

The powers that be do not want us united. Divide and conquer, it’s the oldest tactic in the book. Keep us at each other’s throats while they slit all of ours. We’re all peasants now.

“While I am not a McCain fan .. I did hear him say that he realizes the public wants the borders closed first.”

You’re right, he did say that. He also said this, “”I disagree with what the majority of the American people want.”

“IF.... If only.

Most people don’t realize there’s a problem. Brittany Spears sister had a baby, don’t ya know? Don’t you get told you’re crazy for being concerned with government or silly notions like sovereignty? I do. Every day.

” Unfortunately, McCain’s position on Comprehensive Immigration Reform is pretty well summed up by the bill’s name; McCain/Kennedy, and most of what I see now is his attempt to present a fish as if it is a bear.

It’s a tough job, and it is clear that John believes in his stand on immigration and has trouble in his heart and mind “spinning” it.

Remember that scene in A Few Good Men where Cruise says “I know he wants to say it - he wants to stand up and scream it?”

I strongly feel that this is McCain’s problem. He wants to stand up and say, “Hell yes, I’m for amnesty! That’s my name on the damn bill you damn fools!” - but that would lose him the election. “

You nailed that, bill1952. But, he will. Bet on it. My fear is the day we’ll see the real John McCain. It’s only a matter of time.

Even the McCainacs are having a problem seeing the trouble we are in. They recognize Obama as an enemy but are blind to McCain.

How long until the McCain gestapo show up to police us for posting something negative about their hero?

McCain sucks. I won’t vote for him. Period.

And don’t anyone start with “a vote for anyone other than McCain is a vote for Obama. No, A vote for Obama is a vote for Obama. My vote will be a vote AGAINST Obama AND McCain. They are both Anti-American Traitors.

I will vote for someone else. Anyone else. Or write someone in.

I guess the question is whether the Dems and the President could really get away with this without starting a civil war.

There will be plenty of RINOs in the senate to help them. Since their defeat in 2007, they have tried to pass amnesty piecemeal, e.g. the Dream Act, the Ag bill, the Baca amendment, etc. They will try to fool the American people by not calling it an amnesty, i.e., paying fines, getting to the back of the line, earned path to citizenship, etc.

It will be easier to fight with a Dem in the WH. The Dems want this to be a bipartisan bill so they can gain some cover.

...and the folks who finally forced them to clamp down on the border will be ready to go after them.

I hope that is the case, but these people are persistent and devious. They want to wear us down. You can only cry wolf so many times. It is difficult to mobilize people time and again. If it does pass, it will change the political landscape in this country. It cuts across party lines so the Reps would be wise to remain principled on the issue.

I attended a CATO meeting on Wednesday that had an open borders type, Jason Riley of the WSJ, promoting his new book, "Let them in." Michael Barone spoke as well. His remarks were disappointing. He was saying that the anti-immigrant Reps would have to adapt or die as a party.

>> How long until the McCain gestapo show up to police us for posting something negative about their hero? <<

"McCain Gestapo"? Huh? Are you guys posting on the same forum I am?

I've been on FR for a decade, and if there's ONE thing consistant about this forum, is that McCain is less popular on freerepublic.com than moldy spam. McCain has been consistantly bashed here whether it's 1998 or 2008 (unlike Huckabee who USED to be beloved by freepers until he got in the way of Fred Thompson's path to the white house)

I don't know where all these mystical "McCain gestapo who police their hero" and "McCain cheerleaders" supposedly are. Virtually every freeper I've met who "supports" McCain is holding their nose and only doing so because they can't stand the thought of Obama winning. There is a tiny, tiny element on FR who actually love everything McCain does, but they are less numerous than Ron Paul posters. Even Ultra RINO Rudy Giuliani had more "fans" here than McCain ever did.

At this point, even Ron Paul would be better than McCain (and that is a pretty sad statement).

“It will be easier to fight with a Dem in the WH.”

No way. It will be impossible to fight with a Dem in the WH, unless you’re willing to pick up your gun. If you want to fight it, what you really need to do is elect conservatives to the Congress. It’s the Congress’s feet that will need to be held to the fire. Conservatives demogoguing it will ensure that the libs won’t touch it.

McCain knows that he can count on his conservative supporters no matter what he does. They will tolerate anything. He is using them like pawns and they are more than willing to be used.

While that is correct, it would be more accurate to say that McCain negotiated a compromise on an immigration bill with Kennedy.

It was done in secret among a small group of senators and they bypassed the committee process and tried to ram it thru with limited discussion and amendments.

As for 2006, the McCain-Kennedy compromise did not have enough votes for cloture, so the Hagel-Martinez compromise was piled on top of McCain-Kennedy and an additional 10 republicans voted for cloture(40 dems and 23 GOP).

S 2611 PASSED with a vote of 62-36. 23 Reps [including McCain] voted with the Dems for the bill. Thankfully, Sensenbrenner was able to squash it so that it didn't come up for a vote in House, which had passed an enforcement only bill [HR 4437] the the WH helped squelch.

So do you think it's any different with the other 2 ?

I'm sure it isn't, which is also why I'm not voting for the other two.

Virtually every freeper I've met who "supports" McCain is holding their nose and only doing so because they can't stand the thought of Obama winning.

Although you probably did not mean to do so, your post reveals the key to understanding the two competing views on McCain on this site.

Those who plan to vote for McCain, come hell or high water it seems, always compare the act of voting for him to "holding their noses." What's the big deal about that? Holding a nose, even with both hands, is child's play.

Those who plan to vote against him, on the other hand, compare the act of voting for him to a week-long root canal operation. They know the danger that McCain's statism and paternalism really represents. The nose-holders don't understand this point.

Do you know why McCain is the GOP candidate?

Hispanic Republicans (Cubans) voted for him en masse, and against Romney in Florida.

No way. It will be impossible to fight with a Dem in the WH, unless you’re willing to pick up your gun.

Sorry, but that is a fact. McCain will put pressure on the RINOs in Congress to vote for the bill. The Senate will be a lost cause. Our only hope is the House and the blue dog Dems. The Dems want to make this a bipartisan effort.

FYI: I am an immigration activist who has lobbied on the Hill to defeat the last two. Roy Beck agrees with my analysis.
