The Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce will ink an agreement next week with state agencies and universities that could lead to as much as $100 billion in procurement opportunities for Texas Hispanic-owned businesses in the years ahead.

The parties will sign the memorandum at an event at the Texas Capitol on June 24. The agreement calls for a number of state agencies and universities to earmark procurement work for Hispanic-owned businesses statewide. According to those involved, the total value of the procurements over the next several years could reach $100 billion.

State agencies participating in the initiative include the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Texas Department of Transportation and the Texas Health & Human Services Commission. Texas Tech University in Lubbock and The University of Texas at Austin are among the universities involved.

The procurement work will run the gamut, ranging from audio/visual to legal and construction to video production. More details on the exact types of procurement opportunities will be available after the signing on June 24.

$100 billion represents a lot of pandering to one group of minorities, in my opinion.

What the hell. Make them bid just like the rest of us. This makes me so angry I don’t even know how to respond to it.

One of the comments at the board nails it:

This is state-mandated racism in its purest form.

To exclude a person from being able to do business with the State of Texas because he or she doesn't have a certain color of skin is racism. It's that simple.

To decide that a person is legally able to contract with the State of Texas based on skin color instead of merit is state-mandated racism, not to mention an irresponsible use of my tax dollars.

Weren't the dollars they will use to pay these contractors taken from Texans of all color?

I CANNOT believe that the State of Texas, Governor Perry, and Texas Tech University would approve of this racist policy. They should be ashamed of themselves. Racism is wrong no matter what color your skin is.

Texas will need to spend another $100 billion to fund several oversight agencies to keep track of the looting and pillaging of the money pile.

Most of these people getting the money are not even US citizens-—or obtained US citzienship using forged and faked documents.

AND most of the $100B will be illegally converted, laundered and sent back to Mexico and other Third World countries

It was hypocritical, racist programs like this that pushed me away from the Democrats (and subsequently, other issues as well).

Why people didn’t/don’t rise up against these discriminatory, wasteful, inefficient programs is beyond me. Americans were duped into thinking anti-discrimination laws meant fairness for everyone. This “protected class” nonsense is exactly that. Discrimination is discrimination, and especially so when perpetrated by government, which is overwhelmingly financed by the Anglo majority.

The thing I love is how recent Asian immigrants with NO history of being "disadvantaged" get these set asides as well.

"No-bid" government contracts are wrong, whether for a minority group or da buildin' trade yoon-yuns.

WOW!!!!!

As far as I can tell, in the time it took me to register at "bizjournals.com", the Nazi-Stalinists at the Austin Business Journal deleted all the reader comments and turned off the ability to comment on this story.

Just wow - is there any piece of information that these Nazi-Stalinists won't censor in their drive to destroy the USA?

We are very nearly at the point here where the parasites are going to kill the host - if the parasites weren't so stupid, they'd realize that without the host to feed them, they're all gonna starve to death.
