Scoot Around These Gas Prices
self | 06/16/2008 | vanity

Anybody want to talk about scooters and mini bikes? Face it, with these gas prices the idea makes sense. I have one that gets 80 MPG and tops out at 45 MPH. It cost less than $1500 and, in the State of Georgia, for less than 50cc, there is no registration, no advalorum tax and no special operator's license. Plus the insurance costs about $120 a year and there are special parking places available.

I know these aren't Harley's, alright? But they sure are fun and CHEAP!!

It is (admittedly) the only bike I ever rode, albeit the 1998 edition.

Back when Triumph introduced the T-Bird in the early 50s, it was considered revolutionary at 650 cc. It was the bike of choice for the "rocker" subculture in the UK through the early 1960s, largely because of "The Wild One." Ironic that it took an American film to get the Brits interested in one of their own.

I beg to differ on that point.

On the contrary- last week I rode on I-90 through Ohio, and I found that out in the boonies the other drivers are quite civilized. I was doing 55-60 in a 65 zone and everyone went around me without a problem. In the urban areas it was a different story- around Cleveland and Buffalo I was doing 60 in a 55 zone and getting tailgated by everyone and his brother.

Need a link to the story of the guy who chopped a Harley into a scooter.

We call them organ donors where I work too and call the helmets “brain buckets.” When you’re hit by a full size vehicle at highway speeds, ejected and your head plows into a concrete barrier the helmet is useful for keeping all your parts together. We also see a lot of guide wire amputations from these human missiles.

Ok, shoot, I just reread your first post. Kinda sounds like you bought Chinese...hopefully you just got something else slightly used. My scooter friends and I spend considerable time warning folks about the total ripoff that is pretty much all the Chinese brands. It’s so sad now that they are in such demand that folks are getting suckered left and right. And it doesn’t help that Clark Howard harps on about his, either. Anyway, here’s a kind of humorous link about the Chinese scoots: http://clevelandscooters.com/id60.html

Just curious. Is there a tremendous difference in the results when you are run over by a car on one of these things or on a 1500cc Honda? Seems to me a motorcycle is a motorcycle when it comes to a crash. No metal around you.

Well yes and no. Most motorcyclists aren’t fooled into thinking they can ride in shorts and flip-flops. :/

If they were our primary form of transportation, we’d solve at least three crises at the same time:

Gas prices.

Obesity.

Global warming.

A good portion of my driving is on Interstates.Within the last month or so I've discovered that at 62 MPG my car gets about 35MPG and at 56MPH it gets close to 37...versus the 30MPG it gets at 70MPH.

Until gas is back to $2.50/gal I'm doing 60MPH.That's my contribution to conserving oil.

A friend of mine is a dealer whose biggest regret is being the first to sell TnG in Canada. His advice, and mine as well, is to stick with the quality outfits in Taiwan, Japan and Europe: Piaggio, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Kymco and Sym.

That was my primary form of transportation when I was a teenager.

I want a new mountain bike.

Bikes, scooters, and motorcycles aren’t inherently dangerous of themselves. It’s the sharing the road part with mostly cars and trucks that adds greatly to the danger factor.
