GOP Embraces McCain, Discards Bush
Reuters ^ | June 15, 2008

John McCain has cursed and bullied fellow Senate Republicans on a host of issues over the years. Yet McCain's colleagues are setting aside any hard feelings to embrace his White House bid -- for their own good.

In doing so, many are also distancing themselves from Republican President George W. Bush, widely derided for the unpopular Iraq war, ailing economy and soaring gas prices.

"We are going from rallying around one of the most disliked guys in the world, to a guy who is very well liked in America, but not so popular in the Senate," a Senate Republican leadership aide said. "We'll take that."

Republicans hope McCain, long popular among independents, will give them a boost and hold down anticipated Democratic gains in the November congressional elections.

A recent Wall Street Journal/NBC Poll found that Democrats enjoy a 19-percentage-point lead over Republicans, 52-33, when voters are asked which party they want to control Congress.

By contrast, polls show Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama holding, on average, about a 5-point lead over McCain.

"McCain is running well ahead of his party," said Andrew Kohut of the Pew Research Center, which conducts polls on the congressional and presidential contests.

While Bush's approval rating has dipped below 30 percent, a recent Pew poll found 48 percent of respondents have a favorable opinion of McCain, with about 45 percent unfavorable, despite his dogged support of the Iraq war.

"Republicans have a stake in McCain," said Stephen Hess, a congressional scholar at the Brookings Institution. "They hope he helps energize their party."

A former Goldwater guy who “saw the light” as to what it takes to be socially accepted by the Washington liberal elite, and became a lefty to be part of the elite. They even complimented his sculptures and made him feel soooo arty.

When you’ve been so incompetent and squandered so much political capital through lack of leadership why not keep eating well and continue to squander. Blaming it all on Bush means not taking the blame you so richly deserve.

I'm not revising anything. The historical fact is he first chose Mier which was strongly rebuked and turned up with Alito who is a solid judge.

The historical fact is under President Bush Roberts and Alito were confirmed as justices.

A recent Wall Street Journal/NBC Poll found that Democrats enjoy a 19-percentage-point lead over Republicans, 52-33, when voters are asked which party they want to control Congress.

Of course, half of the people polled don't know that the democrats currently control Congress. If we are going to preserve this Nation, there needs to be some serious voter education.

Every Republican running for office this year needs to be part of a national campaign to run against the "do nothing, good for nothing" democrat controlled Congress.

All Pres. Bush would have to do to lower oil prices is sign an Executive Order sicking the CFTC on the crude scam.

President Bush has been a disappointment in some respects, but this country has not been attacked in nearly 7 years, terror attacks world-wide are down significantly, the economy has been strong throughout his administration until recently, he has made some good SCOTUS nominations....but he has been a failure on immigration and spending. But I truly believe he is a good man who does what he believes is right regardless of political consequences.

I do not believe the same about McCain...I believe he curries favor with the left and the press by poking conservatives in the eye...he burnishes his image as a "maverick" by intentionally being contrarian on conservative issues just to get press and accolades as "reaching across the aisle" even if he himself doesn't believe in some of his own positions. Why should I believe he'll behave differently as president?

Right on abortion (too late)...right on the war (we already won)...right on queer marriage (so what?)...iffy on taxes..WRONG on immigration, CFR, Keating 5, Gang of 14, global warming scam, sucking up to the political enemy, advoctates government micromanaging corporations, total wimp on new oil exploration, wrong on so-called torture, total hypocrite on Gitmo, etc, etc.

While Bush's approval rating has dipped below 30 percent”

Ummm..Mr Al Reuters, the Democratic congress can only dream of such a high approval rating, seeing that they have an approval rating that is a lot lower than that of Bush. Of course Al Reuters left that little detail out of this disgusting BDS article.
As for McCain, he can no more "unite" the Republican party than Saddam could unite Iraq. Republicans MAY vote for McCain because Obama is such a scary character, who will destroy America's economy and make Carter's terrible regime look like a dress rehearsal in economic mismanagement.

I meant to add that he can do two things to earn my vote: Pledge to be a one-term president (so that he can be a true hawk on spending) and select a bona fide conservative for vice president.

“As for Bush, in general the GOP still loves him. I think he has been and still is a great president.”

Me too. Too bad we aren’t doing the body count thing. W has put the hurt on al Qaeda. Moreover, I hope there is a full historical review of how we got into Iraq. W will be vindicated.

The realization that Reagan won the cold war came after his term. Likewise, The realization that W has won the war on terror will come soon too. I figure W freed 50 million people and prevented another homeland attack. All the while, the left has been lying on him and Dems stabbing him in the back. Pretty damn good.

I hope W leaves Iran to Obambi. He’s done enough heavy lifting.

Bush can’t run a third time and he has endorsed McCain. How can this be spun into “GOP discards Bush for McCain”. I hate the media more than I hate the terrorists.

I wish we did have a stake in McCain, a wooden stake.

God save us from Obama and McCain.

Whatever will the Drive-Bys write about next year:

Bush soaks in Europe like only a president can

LONDON - Tea at Windsor Castle with Queen Elizabeth II, bike rides in a Paris park and the lush German countryside, a stunning view from a Renaissance villa outside Rome, a rare stroll with the pope in the Vatican's private gardens?

Not a bad life. It seems President Bush is learning to enjoy the perks of traveling abroad as the most powerful man in the world. (cont.)

The body count thing.

Bush stated that we have kiiled or captured 15,000 per month.

That’s about 130,000 per year times say 5-6 years.

...right on the war (we already won).

We have "won" the War in Iraq just as we "won" Western Europe in 1945 (we are still there), just as we "won" South Korea in 1953 (we are still there) and just as we "won" South Vietnam in 1972 (we bugged out).

With Obama in the White House, you will see a bug out from Iraq and, a year or so after that, you will, in the words of Yogi Berra, have deja vu all over again.

McCain couldn’t energize a dead slug. What disease has infected these dimwits?

I still would choose Bush ovewr the crazy lib McCain.

McCain is no good, and means no good. All McCain wants is another war where he is CIC to prove something because he was not an achiever.

He and his counterpart Obama should BOTH be kicked to the curb. Disgusting.
