PARIS The operation in the private clinic off the Champs-Élysées involved one semicircular cut, 10 dissolving stitches and a discounted fee of $2,900.
But for the patient, a 23-year-old French student of Moroccan descent from Montpellier, the 30-minute procedure represented the key to a new life: the illusion of virginity.
Like an increasing number of Muslim women in Europe, she had a hymenoplasty, a restoration of her hymen, the vaginal membrane that normally breaks in the first act of intercourse.
In my culture, not to be a virgin is to be dirt, said the student, perched on a hospital bed as she awaited surgery on Thursday. Right now, virginity is more important to me than life.

sounds like time for a new culture
Islam is totally devoid of any sense of morality whatsoever. This article says it all about the cult of falsehoods and death, but in their religion, not being a virgin could get them killed. Twisted beyond words.
No sweetie, without it you loose your life to an honor killing. Now put your burka back on.
What in the world does this particular article have to do with Elections/Politics, Democrats and Obama?
If you are a Muslim woman who has been raped, this might be the only way to avoid an honor killing.
Just a thought, but maybe instead of getting elective surgery that has no medical value, women who think this is necessary to avoid being beaten to death on their wedding night should reconsider saying "I do" with a guy who would kill over the lack of an intact hymen. I know that it's hard to find the perfect man, but asking that he not be a homicidal maniac with a hair trigger strikes me as a reasonable baseline.
I’m amazed the NYT used such an accurate headline for this.
That said, this is pretty old news.
I hope there are also surgeons working on ways to make her future husband appear to be a real man.
The article is really troubling, though, on another level. The writer goes beyond criticizing the mohammedan insanity in this area and refers to the preference for a bride to be a virgin as a “prejudice” and seems to suggest that virginity is some silly old vestige of a bygone era, like powdered wigs on men.
but asking that he not be a homicidal maniac with a hair trigger strikes me as a reasonable baseline.
Apparently not.
As an aside, I’m not sure in what context to understand the hair trigger part?
You would think, huh? :)
When I was an embassy guard in Egypt in the late 80’s, this procedure was common back then. The women would fly to Europe to get it done. Limited of course, to those with the means. The rest: SOL. Except for the upper middle class and above, most women didn’t have the final vote when deciding who they married. Egypt was considered one of the most progressive Muslim nations then.
Not in the sense of a pun, of course, just in terms of how little it takes to set off rage. Instantaneously changing your wedding night plans to murder instetad of romance is different from the carefully planned suicide bombing of a group of Danes you've never met because they're from the same country as a cartoonist. Going from "till death do us part" to beating her to death in the span of a few hours seems to suggest that the men for whom women have this surgery are easily set off. I'm not sure why a woman would want to marry a man when as little a thing as a torn hymen (which can happen through the same level of sexual activity as many of these men have engaged in, but also in sports or even riding a bike around the neighborhood) is seen a justification for murdering her. How could a woman ever feel safe around a man who is set off that easily?
Maybe I'm a sissy, but as a guy I can't imagine getting cosmetic surgery on a sensitive portion of my body just to keep a prospective spouse from beating me to death. No matter what good qualities a potential partner had, given a choice between:(1) allowing a doctor to do needlepoint down there for decorative reasons, (2) being beaten to death, or (3) finding someone sane to marry, I would not have given much consideration to options 1 and 2.
said the student, perched on a hospital bed
Perched?? Does she have long toe nails?? Sits like a bird?
They can restore their hymen. They can not restore their virginity.
hhahahahahahahahahahaha!!! glad u caught that...uu tellme!
one reborn every minute
When you base your 'religion' on the subjugation of women, insults to 'honor' requiring murder, and a belief in killing anyone who does not believe as you do, and a vast inferiority complex, you need to have a hair trigger response.
You think the women undergoing this have any choice about who they’re going to marry? Remember, not marrying the man their families have chosen, or worse yet, marrying a different man, would be just as much a spark for an honor killing...
I feel sorry for poor Muslim girls who don’t realize they’re technically not virgin enough due to exercise or something. It really does happen.
At least among the wealthier girls (and I've taught a few from families like this) who have the freedom and finances to get cosmetic surgery, many also have the resources to make a choice on marriage. It might mean leaving the family completely, with no further contact, but I think that is an entirely rational response to a family that considers "honor killing" an option.

I know it happens, and I find it disgusting. Unfortunately, as you say, the poor girls may not have any choice at all, not even the option of cosmetic surgery to restore their "virginity".
