Archaeologists in Jordan say they have discovered a catacomb underneath one of the world's oldest churches that may be an even more ancient site of Christian worship.

Archaeologist Abdel-Qader Hussein, head of the Rihab Center for Archaeological Studies, says the catacombs were unearthed in the northern Jordanian city of Rihab after three months of excavation and show evidence of early Christian rituals.

Shortly after the death of Jesus Christ, disciples founded churches in the area, many of them underground to escape persecution.

How early was the first apostasy? the first heresy?

Believer's baptism and the commemorative Lord's supper are rituals, rituals as old as the New Testament itself.

On Earth? I suppose when the serpent suggested that eating the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil would make Adam and Eve "like God".

The Iconoclast heresy, originating in the 8th century, was adopted by Islam and continues today among many protestants.

Unable to answer my question? Or unwilling?

The first, I could help.

The second — only God.

Actually it started quite a bit earlier than that.

Remember the golden calf?

It does establish the undeniably Biblical principle: that an idea is old proves only one thing.

That it’s old.

Not that it’s true.

sigh... the shrine was ‘possibly found’? Or maybe it was not found? It would be nice if the Fox writers had some command of English, and wrote the correct sentence “Possible ancient Christian shrine found in Jordan”, since there is no doubt SOMETHING was found.

The Catholic Church has fought off many heresies, which began within the first century, and continue today. Probably the widespread heresy today is bibliolatry.

Really? I haven’t met anyone who practices that.

So, again I ask:

How early was the first apostasy? the first heresy?

Please answer, or pick one: (A) don’t know; (B) don’t care.

Be honest, please.

To a Catholic, that would be anyone who practices sola scriptura. Then there is always mariolatry.

Quite possibly it was found, but quite possibly the archaeologists were hallucinating.

Journalistic standards have reached mortifying new lows.

I doubt anyone actually claims to worship the Bible. Nor do I think it is a useful criticism in any case that I know of.

More to the point, there are people who worship the concept of God, rather than God Himself. The difference is they do not actually diligently seek God in their heart. Some of these people might fall on either side of the "Bibliolotary" question.

If we truly seek God, we will naturally seek out the Bible for guidance, comfort, and personal moral correction.
