SecDef is talking now. Based on the report to SedDef by ADM McDonald (Nuclear Reactors and the most senior nuke military person).

Some highlights:

A failure of leadership, systemic pattern of poor perfomance, didn’t follow existing procedures.

Other issues including decline of USAF performance and focus on nuke erosion of perfomance in command, no self-assessment process, declining trend in USAF nuke expertise.

Roots are in last 10 years of leadership but were known when they happened.

The Air Force was told to get the drones up and running in Iraq and Afghanistan for 2 years now but it’s been like pulling teeth in getting it going.

That sounds like the most reasonable explanation as to why this happened so far. I thought there was a report released critical of the Air Force's role in Iraq a month or two ago.

Additionally, leadership fell short; No systematic notice to correct or flag action.

POTUS and CJCS were in agreement of decision.

Other people in the chain are going down, too.

Not one problem with them getting handed their hats if they have screwed the pooch !

Fire em .....anything less is endorsing bad performance and leadership. Something that can not be afforded in the nuclear arena or conventional arenas........

As LeMay used to say, “Unfortunately, sometimes I can’t tell the difference between people that are unlucky and incompetent...I can’t afford to have either in my command.”

Love it! That’s saver. Too bad that law doesn’t apply to union bureacrazis.

“Well this will have all the moonbats saying that it’s a divergence of views about bombing Iran”

They already are at HuffPo and DU. They wanted these guys heads on a platter and condemned Bush for not firing them. Now that they are leaving, they are outraged because they think it`s a master plot by Bush to get rid of them because they disagree with Bush about bombing Iran.

Last time I was in Iraq I stopped cold and did a double take because the convoy security unit was AF. Granted we were in a low risk area and the road was patrolled by Marines but the security for the convoy was AF.

That’s nothing. If Obama wins, he will appoint Dennis Kucinich and Noam Chomsky to Five Star General and then make them chairman of the joint chiefs and head of the air force.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Gates gave an order and the AF dragged their feet rather than following orders. If the rumors are to be believed, there are some folks who probably should be court martialed.

I don't disagree, the only experience I have had with the Air Force is, you call the FAC and ask him to bomb this target and they did, if you didn't like the results they did it again, good enough for me.

They did live a cleaner life than we did, Viet Nam memories.

Lemay made commanders under his leadership "quake in their boots" when he went out on base visits.

The U.S. landed 6 Army/Marine divisions in all of Normandy on D-Day, 1944.

Marine Divisions on Normandy? I never heard of that.

I tell ya what, for a place that is supposed to support the troops, there seems to be a lot of slamming the USAF here lately. Yeah, it's the Chair Force, Zoomies, Club Med...ha ha...

There's no sense in me writing any more. Note to self: stay off of these threads.

Much of it has has to do with envy. I usually ignore it.

Having flown backseat in the taildragger, RVN of the late ‘60s is as you describe it.
We slept in a bunk with clean sheets after a great dinner and a hot shower.
We highly respected the folks down in the mud and did our best from the air to support them. They always seemed happy to see us and appreciative of our support.

The U.S. landed 6 Army/Marine divisions in all of Normandy on D-Day, 1944. The Germans had more than 44 Wehrmacht and Panzer armored divisions for the defense.

No Marines I know of. I think the 6 divisions included 3 British and Canadian divisions as well.
