Barack Obama effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, based on an Associated Press tally of convention delegates, becoming the first black candidate ever to lead his party into a fall campaign for the White House.
Campaigning on an insistent call for change, Obama outlasted former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in a historic race that sparked record turnout in primary after primary, yet exposed deep racial divisions within the party.
The AP tally was based on public commitments from delegates as well as more than a dozen private commitments. It also included a minimum number of delegates Obama was guaranteed even if he lost the final two primaries in South Dakota and Montana later in the day.
The 46-year-old first term senator will face Sen. John McCain of Arizona in the fall campaign to become the 44th president.

Problem is, it will only really hurt the Democrat Party with blacks if they fail to nominate Obama. That’s going to be bad for them no matter how it comes about.
That’s why, even if Hillary does take it to the convention, there’s no way she’s going to win in the end. The super-delegates aren’t about to commit Party suicide for her sake. I don’t think that will stop her from trying, though.

You are absolutely correct. The party of J. Flipfloppin’ Kerry has already seem a number of ‘committed’ Hillary superdelates flip over to Osamabama, they can still flop back before the August vote. I doubt Hillary and the ‘scorned women’ of America are giving in so easy. Many of their blogs are furiously fratricidal. Will we be surprised if the Clinton’s have a number of Aces to play. We need Hillary to win, then lose in November. With Osamabama’s rockstar’status it won’t be McCain v. OHB it will be McCain and a few sensible people v. ‘world opinion’. Sorry.. got carried away. All presidential elections are crucial... this one particularly so.. WOT, Iran, Iraq, N.Korea, oil, food, on and on...

It’s really amazed me to see racial animosity in this campaign among Democrats. Democrats constantly lecture about diversity, tolerance, and that only they are enlightened enough to be color-blind, gender-blind, ethnicly blind.
Well, one of these talking head people said that Democrats can’t win with only African-Americans and egghead liberals.
The funny thing is, these “hard working white” voters who Hillary has attracted in the primaries have been voting more in recent years for Republicans in presidential elections. A good number of “Hillary” voters in the primary would not have voted for her in the general election, and certainly not Obama.
