Agencies, expert unite in an attempt to control nuisance animals in the Brooks community in Estero; attack was fourth on dogs since March.

“For the past three months, I thought: ‘Coyotes in Florida. Yeah, right,’” Love said. “I had never seen a coyote, not even in any zoo in Florida and I’ve been here 27 years.”

But, with the newfound respect for the wild animal, she was quick to add, “We’re on their territory.”

And, she says people didn’t start noticing coyotes in the area until alligators were removed from a lake on the property. She believes the alligators snagged any coyotes that came near the lake.

“I wish we had them back,”

“I hope the citizens don’t demand that FWC start indiscriminately killing coyotes,”

NO, they are on my territory and if they attack then get rid of them.

On top of that, I’m not sure Florida ever was “their” territory. Coyotes are moving into a lot of places where they never were before; their range has extended enormously, simply because there’s lots of food available in these places and nobody is allowed to shoot them.

We live in Florida, on a golf course. We're also pretty close to a nature preserve...and we do have coyotes. They have issued warnings through the neighborhood association to keep pets inside at night. Evidently cats have been the main prey so far, but that would be because you hardly ever see a dog that's not on leash or that is an "outside" dog. We have plenty of alligators, so I don't buy the alligator eating the coyotes theory.

I sincerely doubt alligators prey much on coyotes. Too smart and too fast.

Estero Florida? Are they coming out of the Everglades to the East? Maybe they’re seeing fox.

Pet safety? :-) We've got a slight problem with Coyotes here too. But we've also got a slight solution as well. Here's part of it. :-)

Define Your Varmint!

In truth, this is "part" of an overall varmint control system". The definition of varmint is variable so long as the spotter agrees. :-)

" .. and nobody is allowed to shoot them.

Here's the bug-a-boo of our times ... outside of abortion.

That statement reads, " .. and nobody is allowed to KILL them."

We've allowed our culture to remove the word, and concept of kill, and it is on the same level as the word and concept of "sin" (when was the last time you heard anyone tell their kids, "No sinnin' t'night, you two ... n' be right, straight home after the concert!" )?

It's become a cliche to announce "Words mean something"

Wellll .. yeahhh ... the ones you allow to be used.

America needs to (re)develop a good healthy sense of killin' again.

According to the article two of the dogs killed were on leash. Therefore the coyotes are completely unafraid of humans. They should be shot before they start preying on children.

People have been saying that coyotes are in my part of North Carolina for a few years, but I’d never heard nor seen one, until last fall. It’s easy to mistake them for a dirty, underweight, shepherd-mix stray, if you don’t get a good look at them. They don’t quite move like a domestic dog, and the “dirt” is their natural coat color.

Neighbors of my mom, out in the country near a state park, have Beagles, and have had coyotes go after them twice at night, but they pulled out the shotgun the second time. The coyotes haven’t been back since.

Coyotes up here in Pennsylvania are more like wolves. You never see them though. Employee of mine traps and he got a 65 pounder. That’s a big animal especially when they travel in packs. He also shot one with a deer’s hind leg in its mouth. Game people still pretty much deny that they’re a problem. Will need a documented human attack to get their attention. It’s coming.

I'm more concerned about the "coyotes" that are sneaking in thousands of illegals across our border.

Coyotes usually avoid humans. They are doing what coyotes do - eat things that are smaller than them, usually the easiest meal they can find. If you don't want your cat eaten don't let it wander outside unattended. Wandering & stray cats are more annoying to me than any coyote.

There are a lot of Coy-dogs in the East. That may explain the large size of the animal you saw.

I had a neighbor in Seattle who had a Coy-Dog as a pet.

I've seen two Coyotes since moving to my area of central Jersey, and they were both relatively small and scrawny, ie not likely coy-dogs.

Dog or wolf cross breed no doubt. Whatever they are they are smart and numerous. Don’t look like the little guys out West at all. I think they are probably in every state living off the domestic animals as well as deer.
