Boycott US doughnut chain for halting scarf ad, activists urge May 30 11:11 AM US/Eastern

US activists have called for a boycott of doughnuts-and-coffee chain Dunkin Donuts after it pulled an online ad that a conservative commentator said promoted jihad.

"Dunkin Donuts has capitulated and withdrawn an advertisement for its products following the allegation... that the spokeswoman in the ad was wearing a kaffiyeh, a scarf which is a staple of clothing traditionally worn by Palestinian men," the ANSWER Coalition said in a statement.

ANSWER, which groups hundreds of anti-war and anti-racism organizations around the United States, called for a "worldwide boycott of Dunkin Donuts... to send a powerful message to corporations that engage in racism or pander to anti-Arab and anti-Muslim racists."

A furore blew up earlier this month over a Dunkin Donuts online ad featuring celebrity chef Rachael Ray wearing a black and white scarf around her neck and holding an ice coffee.

Conservative columnist and commentator Michelle Malkin complained on her blog last week that Ray was sporting a "jihadi chic kaffiyeh" in the ad.

"I'm hoping her 'hate' couture choice was spurred more by ignorance than ideology," Malkin wrote.

The problem with Dunkin’ Donuts is they never have Maple doughnuts.

“Dunkin Donuts should have ignored Malkin.”

Exactly. As far as made up “scandals” go, this was weak at the best and would have blown over without much damage if Dunkin Donuts marketing/p.r. department had a spine and refuted Malkin’s paranoid fantasies instead of caving in to them.

Between the scarves and the Fidel Castro hats and Che tee-shirts, I don't often have to wonder which side of the aisle these people are on.

They all work in government. They are your masters.

And don't you forget it. (They gonna remind you anyways.)

If anything or anyone screwed up, it was Rachel Ray.

You really think RR is screwed up? Her "screwiness" could buy and sale the likes of Michelle Malkin. Michelle's has become a conspiracy nut and really needs to switch to Decaf. On the other hand RR continues to bring in the bucks.

I lost a LOT of respect for Michelle in letting her imagination run wild. It is JUST A SCARF....

Whether Michelle was right doesn't matter now. The kooks have raised a standard over this. When you're at war, you fight the enemy where you find him. Even if he's fighting in a stupid place for a stupid reason. His stupidity = his problem.

I don’t normally do doughnuts, but I will go out and get a dozen DD’s on the way home.

You need to show more enthusism. Walk in with "Maple?" magick-markered on your chest and see if that does the trick. Likewise, nothing was more fun last summer than milling around Bangkok airport for two straight days with "Thailand?" scrawled on my chest.

Does Dunkin Donuts use “fair trade” “dolphin safe” coffee?

Who knew the Commies at CANSWER even supported Dunkin Donuts?

I can assure that it is indeed a kaffiyeh.

I bought mine on 5th ave in 1991.

I still wear it as a scarf in the winter.

I ain't no muslim.

But here in Detroit there are many arabs so it would give me the chance to tell them about a Jew who came to believe that Jesus is the Messiah.

Me.

Think of the offers you'd have gotten if you'd written Bangkok on your chest instead...

A staple of their clothing diet?

Maybe for Howard Dean...

But it doesn't look like the so-called palestinians feel naked without it.

It’s kerfuffles like this that make most people laugh at the people concerned about the increased accomodation of Muslim practices in America.

Speaking of which...

Just an informational session.

I simply laugh these days.

Why is it so important for us to have these Islami types in schools.

CAIR and Muslims are quietly chuckling over current America.

aaaahhh... but maybe not.

Otherwise the Islamist/Leftists wouldn’t be squealing so loudly.

Remember the saying of the rock and the pigs. The one the squeals is the one you hit.
