Bob Dole unloads on McClellan

Bob Dole yesterday sent a scalding email to Scott McClellan, excoriating the former White House spokesman as a "miserable creature" who greedily betrayed his former patron for a fast buck.

In an extraordinary message obtained and authenticated by Politico, Dole uses his trademark biting wit to portray McClellan as a classic Washington opportunist.

"There are miserable creatures like you in every administration who don’t have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues," Dole wrote in a message sent yesterday morning. "No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique."

Michael Marshall, Dole's spokesman and colleague at the Alston Bird law firm, confirms the message came from the former senator and presidential candidate. "Yes, it is authentic," Marshall wrote in an email.

"In my nearly 36 years of public service I've known of a few like you," Dole writes, recounting his years representing Kansas in the House and Senate. "No doubt you will 'clean up' as the liberal anti-Bush press will promote your belated concerns with wild enthusiasm. When the money starts rolling in you should donate it to a worthy cause, something like, 'Biting The Hand That Fed Me.' Another thought is to weasel your way back into the White House if a Democrat is elected. That would provide a good set up for a second book deal in a few years"

Dole assures McClellan that he won't read the book -- "because if all these awful things were happening, and perhaps some may have been, you should have spoken up publicly like a man, or quit your cushy, high profile job"

"That would have taken integrity and courage but then you would have had credibility and your complaints could have been aired objectively," Dole concludes. "You’re a hot ticket now but don’t you, deep down, feel like a total ingrate?"

He signs the email simply: "BOB DOLE"

"Every high school class has one or two guys like Scott McClellan in it."

Actually Politico had another pretty good take on McClellan from a Republican strategist -- distilled to essence, it said "McClellan shouldn't be the judge because he was part of the problem, too."

Maybe, just maybe if Bob Dole had shown this fire in the belly attitude when he ran for president, Bob Dole could have made Bill Clinton a one-act play.

Bob Dole is, as usual, wonderful.

But I don't understand what the fuss is about. Back in 2004, George Friedman (stratfor) in "America's Secret War" covered most of the stuff McClellan "reveals" and put it in the proper context, namely guys who run the country are faced with very, very, hard choices and very difficult decisions.

In particular, misdirection in the run-up to a war is nothing new and nothing bad. Roosevelt certainly did it just prior to our entry into WWII. What's bad is running the war poorly, or losing.

Where are the rest of the Republican bottom feeders? Still hiding under slime covered rocks sucking down $170,000 a year?

Good question! Ol' Scotty-boy should have his inbox nailed with hundreds of similar e-mails. I didn't know Mr. Dole had this type of literary anger in him! He should use this and go out on a high note. Kudos, again, to Bob Dole!

Finally... a Republican who has spine.

Where was he keeping his spine when he was minority and majority leader of the Senate?

My opinion of Bob Dole just went up a notch.

Outstanding response and a well-deserved one at that.

Good for Bob Dole. I always did wonder what the heck the administration was thinking putting a little wussy boy like Scotty up on stage. He was painful to watch.

Cronyism goes quite far in the Bush White House unfortunately.

“That’s a heckuva job you’re doing Scotty!” was probably said at some point too. I’m almost surprised he wasn’t nominated as a Supreme Court justice. Yeesh.

It’s been a weird roller coaster ride over the last 8 years; at times you have to cheer as an American and Conservative, and other times you want to hide under a rock because this White House supposedly represented you as a conservative.

If you can make a conservative feel like that, no wonder the rest of the country wants “change” after being brainwashed by the media.

Well done Senator!
While I haven’t always been a fan of yours, I always did know that you were a man of integrity!
There is NOTHING worse than being a traitor to people who trusted you. That’s what Scott McLellan is.
This reminds me of David Brock who went to the other side. He also had NO integrity.

" So, Dole is making his remarks based on heresay."

No. What Dole said was that if Scott had complaints then he should have raised them at that time and not later in a book. For that, Dole calls him a weasel -- deservedly so.
