American Airlines' New Bag Policy Discriminates Against Women
vanity | 30 May 2008 | self

Posted on 05/30/2008 8:22:19 AM PDT by nanetteclaret

American Airlines’ new bag policy discriminates against women, because most women will have to check their bag while men will not. As an example, here are the non-solid products my husband and I take when traveling:

My List: Shampoo, Cream Rinse, Body Wash, Body Lotion, Spray Perfume, Toothpaste, Mouthwash, Contact Lens Solution, Glasses Cleaner, Face Cleanser, Toner, Facial Night Cream, Moisturizer, Sunscreen, Vaseline Lip Therapy, Hand Cream, Mascara, Lipgloss

My Husband’s List: Shampoo, Cream Rinse, Toothpaste, Mouthwash, Glasses Lens Cleaner

Since we are required to put our lotions in a quart bag if we want to carry them on board, it is clear that my husband’s items will fit into a quart bag, while mine will not. Thus, I have to check the bag with my items, while he can carry his on. I will have to pay a $25.00 fee, while he will not. Cutting down the number of items I take is not an option because I have very dry skin and it is exacerbated by travel.

Most women use about 3 times as many products on a daily basis as men do. American Airlines’ policy is an example of discrimination against women who have no choice but to check their bags.

AA has a highly trained operations management team that has undoubtedly run various models to analyze their situation. I would not second guess their judgment. Of course, the public's and competitors' reactions are uncertain so the models may be wrong. AA will change policy if they have misjudged customer sentiment.

Gorsh!!! I could defend AlGore's "Inconvenient Truth" with a statement like this!

You may be an ass... I do not know. Just like you don't know if the original poster is a total babe or not.

Can't speak to whether the original poster is a babe or not, but I believe I have exchanged FReepmail with her in the past, and from that recollection I believe she is one of the sweetest FReepers you'd ever meet -- not worthy of the savaging she's taking on this thread.

The geniuses in the boardroom thought this up; those same geniuses who awarded themselves millions in bonuses only weeks ago.

I’m all for moving up the corporate ladder, but this is once again, a slap in the face for AA employees. The execs get their millions and only days later, they stick it to the employees and the customers.

When my company or myself is paying good money for a flight, decent service is not too much to ask. (Don't even get me started on Air France, which I now flatly refuse to fly anymore.)

My experience of Air France service is mixed. One flight ranks very near the top -- another (same trip) quite low.

Agreed. FR is morphing into an equal opportunity snipe fest and it sickens me. Whatever happened to the golden rule “do unto others as you would have them do unto you?” An ounce of consideration would go a long way to fixing the problem. Banning the jerks is another option....

Are you asserting that public perception and competitor behavior are certain? Are you asserting that the AA staff has not developed models to analyze policy impacts related to rising fuel prices? Are you asserting that it is easy to model complex situations such as the impact of rising fuel prices?

Al Gore knows nothing about modeling. AA has a highly trained staff who has developed innovative and successful models of airline operations. I am sure that the AA operations staff has developed models for various scenarios dealing with rising fuel prices. Management has chosen the option dealing with baggage charges.

AA will live with their successes and failures unlike Al Gore and rat politicians. Unfortunately we will live with the consequences of the enviroMarxism of Al Gore and rat politicians.

I'm merely a skeptic and your position has not crossed my threshold of belief, that's all. If You're A Believer (cue the Monkees' song), go for it.

As a too-frequent flyer (65k+ miles this year already), I'm avoiding AA. Caveat emptor.

YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO OUR GENDER! Well I'll just bet you're one of those plain jane types, who don't use any of the feminine products.

I think it is a gender tax (surcharge)and think it a bit over the top. I like my cosmetics and like to take them with me, because I don't really want to have to buy them at the other end of the trip.

So men you probably don't hardly take any clothing let alone much in the way of grooming stuff. They seem to be able to travel with a toothbrush, comb and two pairs of underwear!

If they put a tax on weight well that would rule out travel for nearly 50 % of today travelers.

What else are the tax (surcharge) Nazi's going to get us for?

Do they charge extra for all the crap that little kids take on the plane? I'll bet not because all the whiney parent's would sue for discrimination!

Or do you work for the airlines an old stew are you?

Well, I think people pay plenty already for airline tickets and taxes and everything else.

Service sucks big time on airlines, and all services in general, not at all like it was in the past. With all the stuff they sell on the plane while you are in flight, hell they could at least let you take a few of your personal things with you.

But I guess you worry about the mega companies and whether or not they go bankrupt, well they could start with not paying the C.E.O's seven figure incomes for sitting on their self centered ARSES, at a desk and attend a board meeting once or twice a year, and give a little something to the passengers who make the nice money they not so humbly enjoy! Our country sucks right now and our hard earned money can't even allow any of us to have a pleasant airline trip for a vacation..It becomes a real pain in the arse!

They take care of their best (money generating) customers, as they should.

If they took care of all of their customers, they might have more "best (money generating)" customers.

I've been flying internationally on a steady basis for business for over ten years now and AA ticked me off (as a Business Class customer) on a flight from Miami to Buenos Aires in 1999. I haven't flown them since, but I've got two favorites that have always treated me and anyone else I have observed very well.

It's not too much to ask, really.

Hear, hear!!! Those that don’t mind paying more for everything and want to live the Liberal way, pony on up to the ticket desk and hand them your wallet with a smile and then bend over; you know it’s the Pelosi way of life!

So by your logic I, as a man without luggage, have been subsidizing your luggage all these years.

Talk about a sense of self-entitlement. If I did not know better I’d think you were a whiny liberal.

Protest? It’s a free market. Take your business elsewhere if you are not happy.

My point is, why couldn't the airlines just have raised the price of everyone's fare $10. It would have accomplished the same thing and have been really less aggravating.

Similarly, I'd like to be served a lobster dinner with a nice bottle of Pinot, and have access to in flight shoulder massages. Why can't they just raise the price of everyone's fare $50 to accommodate my wishes?

Consolidate! Go to Dollar Tree and get travel size bottles. Put your cleanser/toner/moisturizer/shampoo in them. They should last 7-10 days. Shampoo can even double as a body wash, and instead of packing perfume, pack a perfumed lotion instead.

On my last trip I fit all of this stuff in my carry-on bag, and to keep it down to one bag, I put my purse in the carry-on bag and kept it in there when I boarded.

Where there's a will, there's a way. ;)
