Stupid Rules, stupid bureaucrats.
Imagine giving her the title, then some wannabee filing suit; the case would be laughed out of court.
But, this is one hell of a line for a resume.
My nephew just graduated out here in Colorado, and his class named 23 valedictorians (all but three with a lower G.P.A. than my nephew). BTW, my nephew was not one of the valectictorians - go figure...
Wankers.
They talk about competence testing for teachers and performance standards, but they ought to start with IQ tests and psychiatric observation.
If an straight A's is 4.0, then how is a 5.898 even possible.
In the new Liberal school system everybody is a winner ....
She complete her four years of high school in three calendar years. It doesn’t change the fact that it was four years of school. A school year is meeting a certain requirement for class credits, not a period of time.
This says a lot more about the intelligence of "educators" than it does this student.
Indian?
When I graduated high school, a million years ago, we had a young man who was to be valedictorian. His 2 younger brothers decided to graduate early at 3 years and took both of the top spots. He never recovered. His brothers got the scholarships and the accolades. He worked so hard for those 4 years. His parent did this to him and it was cruel.
I understand where the young woman is coming from, don’t get me wrong. I admire her and agree she deserves the honor. Just letting you hear another side.
This decision SUCKS. The school is doing EVERYONE a disservice.
Follow the money -- somebody is getting a payoff for this travesty.
For those of you who did not read the article, it’s even worse than it seems. The girl was also denied a scholarship, which went to the 2nd place student instead.
And she was also advised by a counselor that her graduating in three years would not jeapordize her valedictory status.
What a tragic story. Too bad the school district lacks the wisdom to reward her for her accomplishments.
here's a good quote...Is it all about the $$$$ (to the district) or the power to mold/destroy the young mind(s)....or both?
Everyone knows the school will be sued if they don’t follow the written rules so why are we mad at the school?
Shouldn’t we all be mad at lawyers?
Can you say: “Lawsuit”?
The rules, grades, ratings, etc. are generally manipulated so that the "right" people get it.
The truth of it is that the rest of life is that way too. Even the best manager is going to be influenced at least some by competent brown-nosing. You will go a lot farther making sure you are the right person instead of just being right.
“I have not heard of any educational institution penalizing a student for excellence for completing a demanding set of classes ‘too quickly,’ “
Sure you have. It happens all the time now in “liberal” and “politically correct” America. She’s just not “disadvantaged” enough. Those darned Indians and Asians study too much and work too hard and don’t get in trouble with drugs and sex, etc. It’s not fair if they aren’t a bunch of illiterate goof offs like the rest of the “real” Americans.
Now if she were black or Hispanic, they’d have to give her the award.
Anyone who spends their lives policing government rules without allowing even a hint of common sense to intervene in their decisions is brain dead or a liberal!
And now he makes half a million$ a year!
From the article:
“This really diminishes the value of the valedictorian title,” she said.
Yeah, by about the worth of a one-year scholarship from the State.
My twin brother and I graduated a year early from Tennessee Preparatory School in 1977. We had to complete Senior English during the summer months. But the whole thing created hay at graduation, which occurred in June, before we’d completed Senior English. As wards of the State of Tennessee, we were also eligible for full scholarships, but we had to compete for those as Juniors against regular Seniors. We both got scholarships in the end, but there was alot of acrimony. We’d come in one/two on the ACT and SAT against the Senior class, so that helped. But no Senior Prom for us. No Year Book with Senior pictures, blah blah blah.
