What Obama's campaign released via first link above states he served in the Infantry. I assume it's possible the records are wrong, or he changed branches. But I'm unaware of that as a standard practice. Perhaps it happened during WWII for manpower reasons? Otherwise, Obama's Great Uncle would seem to have done most of his marching and liberating while at sea.

Can Barry help it if the white side of his family LIED to him? ;)
To: driftdiver
Kerry’s supporters didn’t care either.
...until someone hammered on the character flaw hard & long enough that they had to care.

Remembering my military days - and the troubles we had with records - I think there’s a reasonable possibility Obama is right about his great uncle serving in the Army.

The problem here is that we are thinking “Army” in the white, euro-centric model of word meaning. Barak, he-whose-full-name-must-never-be-uttered, meant something much more inclusive, hopeful, and tolerant when he said “Army”. It’s 2008 and time you crackers got out of the corn patch!

But we do. We owe that to the Greatest Generation and to their memory. And to History.
No way does he get to hijack History in this manner. No way in Texas. No way.

Oh well, things like this happens in families. I was always told that we were direct descendants of Stephen F. Austin. Then I studied Texas history and discovered that Austin had no direct descendants. So much for Austin being a family name.

Excellent comment posted at the source:
Obama: How GrandPa Saved The Jews Interesting. If you follow political news, there's one demographic Obama has been courting relatively unsuccessfully - the Jewish vote.
So, suddenly his Grandfather helped to liberate Auschwitz?? Even though it was liberated by the Soviets?
Has the Oba-messiah been getting such a pass from the media, he thinks he can actually say anything to win votes and get away with it?
What a buffoon he's turning out to be.

Snopes claimed for years the same thing, that perhaps Hillary’s MOM lied to her about the origin of her name.

So, when his “uncle” got back from WWII he went right up to his attic. My dad told me,when he returned from WWII he went right to the local beer joint in his hometown of Albany,N.Y. He said he stayed there for three days. He was just a typical white person.

Mark my words, before this is all over, it will be a friend of the family (to remain nameless to protect his privacy) who they all considered to be an uncle.
I had a similar conclusion that I posted in a related thread earlier this morning:
It wasn't his uncle (old version).
It was his great uncle (new version).
Maybe it really wasn't a blood relative/uncle, but more like The Rev Wright, whom he considered an uncle.
[It is curious that Obama manages to pull relatives from his mother's side, the white side out from under the bus, when he needs them, usually to on issues related to war, military service, patriotism.]

“Kerrys supporters didnt care either.

I’m not suggesting we stop hammering him. I just think the majority of his suporters don’t care. They aren’t electing a president they are electing their messiah.
Perhaps we can get a few of the middle folks though. Our options stink but you play with the cards dealt.

” How so? Hes been caught in numerous lies already and his supporters dont care. Dennis Prager made a statement on his radio show that puts this in line. The left doesnt care about his inexperience, lies, ignorant policies, anti-Americanism, muslim background and so on adnauseum.”
The left does care about his anti-Americanism; that is why they are supporting him.

I'm starting to get the impression that little Barak may have had several uncles(unrelated) while growing up.
