BATON ROUGE -- A pro-gun rights House committee Wednesday shot down, 12-1, a bill to impose a statewide ban on assault weapons starting Jan. 1.
House Bill 68 by Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-New Orleans, is dead for the session unless he can amend it onto another bill. The only member of the House Committee on the Administration of Criminal Justice who voted against killing the bill was Rep. Roy Burrell, D-Shreveport.
Richmond was joined in his presentation by New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and ranking members of the New Orleans Police Department, who brought confiscated assault weapons and ammunition to the hearing. Nagin said that since Hurricane Katrina, the department has seized more than 600 illegal assault weapons in the city, many used by drug dealers.
Richmond's bill would have required all assault weapons to be turned over to State Police by Jan. 1. It also would have required owners to register their weapons with State Troopers and pass a criminal background check.
Owners who qualify could pay a license fee and get an annual permit. Assault weapons would be confiscated from those who fail the background check. The bill called for a penalty of as long as six months in jail, a fine of as much as $500, or both for having an expired assault weapon permit. Individuals who did not have a permit could be fined as much as $2,000 and face as long as two years in jail, or both.
"There is no sport about these guns," Richmond said. "These guns are made for killing."
Rep. Elbert Guillory, D-Opelousas, said that in his rural district, citizens need weapons to match the firepower of criminals because they are at least 10 minutes away from police help. "They are responsible for their own safety," he said...

Guns in general are made for killing. The Second Amendment STILL prevents you from licensing or confiscating semi-automatic weapons, or full autos for that matter!

Looks to me like some offials ought to be in jail.
Good work, LA
Did Ray "chocolate city" Nagin mention the OVER 1000 LEGALLY owned weapons that were seized from law abiding citizens during hurricane Katrina?
The 2nd Ammendment was written with these “fascists” in mind. Come and get em boys.......you better bring enough gun....
Good for La.
Last time I checked my "sports guns" were more powerful and killed critters just as easy, if not easier, then my "assault weapon"
Didn’t stop them in New Jersey.
Where does that Republican Governor stand on this issue?
If we can’t deal with the criminals, we’ll make criminals we CAN deal with.... D. LA.
Ye gods, registration, outlawing possession, criminalization for prior ownership, confiscation
the list goes on. Remember this is not an isolated instance, just the usual litany of what they have in store
for us.

Uh huh. I suppose then that these are fully automatic assault and battle rifles?
Or just whatever they want to define as an assault weapon?
Darn right it is, pissant. And Gov. Jindal, prior to leaving the U.S. House, through his gun bill made sure that firearms will never be seized from law-abiding citizens after a natural disaster, as was done in New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina. Jindal is a good friend to 2A and the NRA and its members.
Well, I hope he turns out to be a great governor. He certainly is infinitely better than the bimbo he replaced
IIRC, it was a semi-auto ban.

Louisiana House Committee to Consider Assault Weapons Ban!
HB 68 would ban pump-actions as well as semi-automatics, and millions more firearms than the Clinton "assault weapons" ban of 1994-2004. His definition of "assault weapon" would include numerous autoloading and pump-action deer rifles, autoloading .22 rimfire rifles, some 19th century pistols, as well as many firearms with a "military-style appearance" used for self-defense, target shooting and hunting. He even preposterously makes the claim that these firearms are "equally as dangerous as machine guns and explosive devices." The bill goes on to ban firearm parts such as muzzle brakes, ported pistol barrels, and other commonplace firearm accessories, calling them "assault weapons conversion kits." Here is a list of just a few guns that his bill would ban:
Center Fire Rifles: Benelli R1; Browning BAR, Mark II Safari autoloaders, Browning Pump Rifle; Colt, Armalite, Les Baer, etc. Match Rifles; DSA Model SA58; Fabrique Nationale FAL; Harrington and Richardson Models 340, 360; H&K 770, 2000, SL6, SR9, 300, 630, 91, 93; Marlin Camp Carbine, Model 992; Mitchell Model LW-9; M-1 Carbine, all makes and models; Reising Model 60; Remington 7400, 740, 74, 4, 8 semi-autos; Remington Model 7600, 760 pump-actions; Ruger Deerfield, Mini-14, Ranch Rifle, Mini-30; Springfield M1A, Match, Super Match, SAR-48, SAR-4800, SAR-8; Valmet Hunter; Winchester Models 100, 1905, 1907, 1910; .22 Rimfire Rifles AMT Hunter; Anschutz Model 525 Deluxe; Armscorp Model 20C; AR-7 Explorer and Henry U.S.; Beretta Neos; Browning Buckmark; Charles Daly Field Grade, Superior Grade; CZ Model 511, 611; Daisy Models 2203, 2213; Harrington and Richardson Model 700; Ithaca X5-C, X15; Iver Johnson Trailblazer; Mauser Model 105; Mossberg Models 152, 350, 352; Reising Leatherneck; Remington Models 597, Nylon 77, 522; Ruger 10/22; Savage Models 64, 7, 1903, 1909; Marlin Models 522, 7000, 795, 795SS, 70; Thompson/Center Classic Benchmark; Weatherby Mark XXII; Winchester Models 77, 490.
It wasn't a senior moment. I forgot to check that last link for 'la'.
So where did these illegal assault weapons come from?
Possibly the same place those drug dealers acquired their merchandise from?
How would confiscatng my AR-15 change that?
In addition to firearms, I own a baseball bat with “TraumaKing” crudely carved in the wood. Its whole raison d’etre is to be a weapon with which I could assault an intruder. An assault weapon, in other words. But I shouldn’t worry. The bill is called “Assault Weapons Protection Act”, right?
Here’s a link to an NRA press release that talks about the definition:

The Second Amendment doesn’t “prevent” ANYTHING...it’s just words on paper to the other side. Just like the rest of the Constitution. Right now, we are depending on judges to uphold it. What happens when the other side has judges working for them???
The Constitution is a social contract; when the other side breaks or it or won’t abide by it’s rules, all bets are OFF.
YOU prevent THEM from taking away YOUR rights with your weapons, when all else fails. THAT is the brutal reality of it.
That’s when YOU, the American Citizen, must enforce YOUR rights. Yes, you are indeed right - guns ARE made for killing. The American Revolution couldn’t have been won without them. The original “assault rifle” - the Pennsylvania Long Rifle - was in the hands of American citizens then, as it’s modern cousin is in our hands now. To me, it’s a Homeland Defense rifle. This weapon guards my NATION’s liberty, MY personal liberty, my NEIGHBOR’s liberty, my CHILDREN’s liberty, and the liberty of our posterity.
The WILL to do it is what counts...and you either decide right there and then, at your doorstep, what line you are willing to cross (or let THEM cross), or you bury those tools ahead of time for another day and decide where to go from there.
THEY already know what lines they’ll cross. They don’t care who they have to kill, or what carnage they have to cause, to further their agenda. They want a socialist world. They’ve stated it repeatedly, the Dems and liberals are bought and paid for, and it’s only a matter of time before they get power and try their traitorous crap again.
The REAL question is - what are WE willing to do about it when it happens...? Personal decision for all gun owners. They seek to isolate us, make us criminals in our own country, and ultimately do away with us - one way or another. And make no mistake - it IS happening. New Orleans after Katrina should have awaked EVERY gun owner in this country. An out-of-control Thug mayor and his equally out-of-control Thug Police Chief had the audacity to seize the firearms of law-abiding citizens and leave them at the mercy of his own criminal underclass.
The same situation is almost happening in Philly. DemoCom Mayor Thugnutter and Police chief Thugramsey and his thug city council just tried to ban citizens from owning a whole laundry list of so-called “assault rifles”. The NRA sued to stop the laws from being enacted. It went to a judge. We’re hanging on the words of a female judge who may or not be sympathetic to the other side. This is unacceptable.
Our rights are NOT negotiable.
I know my decision already.
People DIED for this right. We should NEVER give it up easily, nor cheaply.

Larry, Curly, and the “pretty boys” intellectual giants. I doubt any of them can spell Constitution. Richmond is a major shill for the anti-gunners in the dumbocrat party.
