Prognosis Usually Bleak for Condition, a Glioma
NY Times ^ | May 21, 2008 | LAWRENCE K. ALTMAN and ANAHAD O’CONNOR

The statement that Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s doctors issued on Tuesday made clear that his malignant tumor was a glioma, a cancer that arises in the brain and that often carries a bleak prognosis.

Gliomas occur more frequently with advancing age, and studies have shown that in general patients in their 70s fare less well than those 45 and younger. Still, the statement also said Mr. Kennedy, 76, was in “good spirits and full of energy” and walking around his room at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Mr. Kennedy’s glioma is in the parietal area in the upper part of the left side of his brain, above the ear. This area of the brain involves motor control and ability to understand language, among other functions.

Malignant brain tumors rarely spread elsewhere in the body. But like the root of a plant, cancerous brain tumors can invade nearby areas in the brain.

Gliomas are categorized by subtypes and by a numerical gradation based on how aggressive they appear. But the doctors did not provide these details or the tumor’s size, saying only that the diagnosis was made by removing a small piece of the cancer in a biopsy, which followed a series of other tests that began after Mr...

--snip--

Mr. Kennedy underwent surgery seven months ago at the same hospital to restore blood flow through a narrowed carotid artery in his neck and to prevent a possible stroke. He had no symptoms at the time, the hospital said.

As part of the testing for that procedure, Mr. Kennedy very likely had an M.R.I. brain scan, Dr. Keith L. Black, director of neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said in answer to a question. Because gliomas are fast-growing cancers, it is possible...

When a man is discovered to have cancer, the pertinent fact is that he is a dying man, not whether he is a dying good man or dying bad man.

I agree with you. It's like the old thing of not kicking a dog when it's down. That is disgusting, and really should be beneath us. After he is dead and buried, then say what you want but not now.

It's only common decency.

May God bless Ted Kennedy and his family in their time of need.

I am ashamed of some of the posts on these threads.

"Is there some PC rule on FR that says that when an evil man gets sick, we must pretend he was saint? "

Don't know about the rule, but many here do pretend that he was a saint. All I have to say about the situation, is May God's will be done / Amen.

Mary Jo was an only child and her parents are dead. Her good “friends” who were at the party with her never spoke up on her behalf.

My mother passed away from a glioma in 1993.

From reading this, it seems as if Senator Kennedy is going to have to make some decisions regarding his quality of life for his remaining time. Go through chemo and radiation therapies and all the side effects, or simply live out his days on his own terms.

Don't get me wrong, I find it hard to summon any compassion for a the man - he has single-handedly worked against American interests for over forty years in the Senate. But I will refrain from speaking any more ill of him.

Many of America's current deep problems stem from bills he sponsored or supported.

IMHO, that will be Ted Kennedy's legacy.....

I was deleted 3 times yesterday. My posts acknowledged sympathy for his family and close friends.

I didn’t mince words about his record and political leanings.

My Dad, a good man, told me not to weep when he dies. He says he had a long life, good wife, good family, great job and Jesus.

If I weep for Ted, it wil be for all he didn’t have and destroyed.

Mary Jo won't be forgotten..the MSM will just imply it was a blip on an otherwise outstanding record of service to this great nation..

The Old Double Standard that the MSM applies to libs versus their treatment of Pubbies and Conservatives. A senator caused the death of a young woman - hell, he should have been charged with a number crimes, up to and including second-degree murder - but he skated with leaving the scene of an accident. And this, the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, will be a blip. Just as Robert Byrd's membership in the KKK is a blip on his outstanding (ahem!) public service career.

But let one Republican or conservative make a statement that can be twisted or construed to imply racism, or jingoism, or simply good old fashioned patriotism, and they crank up the presses and the talking heads for 7x24 coverage until someone apologizes or resigns - or maybe both!

he was the youngest son of the grand Kennedy clan ( they often forget old Joe was a bootlegger..that is never mentioned unless in a documentary).

Papa Joe was a bootlegger, and he was also recalled as Ambassador to the Court of St James before our entry into WW II as he was an outright Nazi sympathizer who even stated that the Western democracies were finished. That was the end of his public career. He did manage to get one of his sons elected President, thanks largely to Richard Daley.

He will leave very very shallow footprints in the shifting sands of time. 20 years from now he will be forgotten by all but a few Kennedy hagiographers.

The word I was groping for was “Ennobling”. The press will do their best, but there is not much to work with.

Is it too early to start on the retrospectives?

Here's my favorite:

I went to Washington with my son, who had received a free trip to the Capitol for winning some school competition of one sort or another.

We were in the observation gallery above the Senate floor watching the goings-on — some debate about a bill before the vote. As soon as Kennedy took the floor and started to play to the C-span camera with one of his famous ‘orations’, practically everybody — on both sides of the aisle — promptly got up and walked out like they were late for cocktails or something, and he continued to thunder on in typical fashion. Funniest thing I saw that trip (and quite instructive, too)...
