There’s Too Much at Stake for Conservatives to Shrug Like Atlas
North Star Writers Group ^ | May 19, 2008 | Nathaniel Shockey

Conservatives don’t love John McCain, but unless they’re considering abandoning their cause with Atlas Shrugged proportions, there’s no way in hell they’ll vote for Barack Obama.

Sometimes, things have to get worse before they get better. And with that idea in mind, the conservative movement really is America’s crutch.

The most specific example is economics, as conservatives constantly preach lower taxes and greater individual freedom. One would think that the Bush tax cuts, which have yielded continued economic growth (yes, our economy is growing, despite the lies you keep hearing), and the burgeoning economy during the Reagan Administration would provide enough proof to, at the very least, convince people that maybe, just maybe, there’s something to be said for lower taxes.

Nice way to move the bar, AB. My point is that McCain has been no worse to conservatives than other Republicans. But he will push for some of our agenda while Obama will push for none of it.

It always gets back to Obama. We cannot ignore what an Obama presidency will mean for our country.

McCAin:

WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain yesterday unleashed an attack on his own party, saying the GOP is ``astray’’ on key issues and criticizing President Bush [related, bio] on the war in Iraq.

*****``I believe my party has gone astray,’’ McCain said, criticizing GOP stands on environmental and minority issues.

*****``I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have no problems with it, in their views and their philosophy,’’ he said. ``But I also feel the Republican Party can be brought back to the principles I articulated before.’’

*****The maverick senator made the remarks at a legislative seminar hosted by U.S. Rep. Martin T. Meehan (D-Lowell) as he again ruled out running on a ticket with Democrat John F. Kerry [related, bio].

*****The Arizona Republican took on President Bush for failing to prepare Americans for a long involvement in Iraq, saying, ``You can’t fly in on an aircraft carrier and declare victory and have the deaths continue. You can’t do that.’’

*****McCain said the U.S. should seek more U.N. involvement in Iraq. ``Many people in this room question, legitimately, whether we should have gone in or not,’’ he said, adding that that debate ``will be part of this presidential campaign.’”

(and he was mavericking on David Letterman last year, claiming GWB wasted the lives of our troops)

“We took 8 years of Clinton, a Democrat for 4 years won’t be the end of the world.”

Actually, republicans accomplished more under Clinton than they did Bush.

Our calculations are different.

I believe an Obama presidency would be far more oppressive to conservatives and damaging to the country, than a McCain presidency.

Have you ever felt more oppressed under a Republican presidency than a Democratic presidency?

How well do you think Obama will follow the Republican party platform?

The difference is that with an Obama presidency, conservatives will get off their butts and fight tooth and nail, everything he does, just like Clinton.

With a McCain presidency, conservatives will take it in the shorts because they will be compelled to stay silent, lest they break the 11th Commandment, just like with Bush.

So, which do you prefer?

Given the choice, I prefer to have conservatives standing up and fighting instead of being cowed into silence by 'their' party.

Neither do his paid shills "supporters."

Considering there are a dozen instances of McCain screaming obscenities at conservatives that oppose him, I would feel more oppressed under McCain than Obama.

Read reply 101.

Do you honestly think Obama will be kinder to a conservative or a Republican agenda than McCain?

Actually, republicans accomplished more under Clinton than they did Bush.

That's because conservatives weren't cowed into silence by that pesky 11th Commandment with Clinton like they have been under Bush.

Expect more silence under McCain.

Atlas Shrugged proportions

Sophomoric. First be an Atlas then shrug. There might be some Atlases here and there, but most are not.

The answer is no. They wouldn't be with John McCain either.

I expect both will treat conservatives exactly the same, once the election is over.

Just perusing some of the McBootlickers’ posts today on several threads, including this one and have come to the conclusion that not ONE of them EVER raised a child. One thing that I learned from my parents, that I used in my own household is that bad behavior has consequences. Old Juanito has been very, very bad for a LOT of years. These people want to reward him for it. The saddest thing is, when he gets into office and kicks them squarely in the nutz, they are going to act surprised and betrayed. I plan on laughing heartily at them with “I told you so’s” all around. What is even worse is that after they reward this scumbag, other Repubes are going to take that as a hint. The Repube Party will officially become the Democrat Party of 5 years ago, with the Democrat Party being slightly to the left of that.

"Actually, republicans accomplished more under Clinton than they did Bush."

Good point. The best thing that Clinton did for Republicans was to elect a Republican congress for the first time in years, nother Democrat will give Republicans that opportunity in 2010.

Okay, AB, I'll bite. I've heard that before. We were more unified under Clinton, which isn't the same as accomplishing more. But please tell me how your statement is true.

I don’t expect to be cowed into silence by McCain or anyone else. It’s not in my makeup to allow it.

On the other hand McCain doesn’t seem to have any problem with legislating silence.

On this, I respectfully disagree.

The answer is no. They wouldn't be with John McCain either.

Really? Let's find out. What actions has McCain taken during his tenure that has caused the most damage to the country? Don't hold back. Post the truth.

We have more areas of agreement with McCain than Obama, so how could both a McCain and Obama presidency be equally bad for conservatives?
