UK: Police didn't have the money to catch burglars who beat me with a crowbar

Police didn't have the money to catch burglars who beat me with a crowbar

A businessman who was almost beaten to death by three crowbar-wielding burglars claims police haven't carried out DNA tests to identify his attackers – because they can't afford to pay for them.

IT consultant Simon Pither, 36, was savagely beaten over the head when he interrupted the gang at his £300,000 home.

The married father of two sustained such serious skull injuries during the assault that doctors told him he was lucky to be alive.

Scarred: Simon Pither suffered serious head injuries in the burglary

He had emergency surgery, 40 internal and external stitches and two-and-a-half months of intensive physiotherapy.

Following the brutal attack, detectives took a sample of DNA from under his fingernails in a bid to track down the gang.

But two months after the incident a Scotland Yard officer called his home and said the DNA samples had been returned because the force did not have sufficient funds to pay for the analysis.

Mr Pither said: "The world is run by budgets. It is outrageous and disgraceful."

Commercial DNA laboratories offer similar profiling tests for around £200.

It was Mr Pither's sister-in-law, teaching assistant Sarah Cowmey, 30, who took the call from police while she was babysitting his two children.

She said: "The police said the DNA samples which they had sent in to the laboratory had been rejected because they didn't have sufficient funding, so they would be sending them again within a week or so because hopefully the funding would have come through.

"They didn't ask who I was, so I was a bit surprised that they were willing to give out that sort of information."

The attack took place in January when Mr Pither returned to his home in Norwood, South London.

He recalled: "I arrived and there were two guys standing with their heads round the back of the TV.

"One turned round and asked me what I was doing there, and I told him it was my house. All of a sudden we started to have a bit of a tussle."

Mr Pither, who used to teach martial arts, tried to prevent the men leaving but during the struggle one of them struck him with the crowbar.

He said: "I looked up and saw the guy leaving, and all of a sudden there was blood shooting down my face.

"I walked back in and there was blood dripping on the carpet.

"It was new and I thought, 'My wife will kill me if I get blood all over that', so I went outside the front door and phoned my father-in-law, who lives nearby, and he rang the police."

The three men, who were black and aged between 17 and 25, made off with a camera, an iPod, a watch and some memory sticks.

Conservative MP Philip Davies said: "This sounds bizarre and completely outrageous and unacceptable.

"If dangerous thugs are still at large because the Metropolitan Police cannot pay their tab, we've reached a pretty depressing state of affairs.

"The Met spends hundreds of thousands of pounds each year on diversity training.

"They should concentrate on their first priority: tackling crime."

A spokesman for the Forensic Science Service said: "On average, DNA tests can be turned around in three or four days.

"In urgent cases, they can be turned around more quickly, perhaps taking as little as 24 hours."

In a statement, Scotland Yard said: "We are currently awaiting the results from the laboratory relating to forensic and DNA opportunities that have been taken from the premises as a result of the offence.

"Financial considerations have never had any influence on the way this case has been handled."

The brit police can afford to prosecute those who “insult” islam. Conclusion: they don’t WANT to help normal people.

Nobody cares.

You got that right. One of the things that was stolen from her house were a few books of checks. The thief actually tried to use one of her checks to pay his utility bills. No, I'm not kidding. The bank told her to contact the police, which she did, but the police told her that it was up to the bank to initiate the investigation. Either way, she had already closed the account as soon as the checks were stolen, so she wasn't out any money. But it seemed like NOBODY was interested in actually arresting the person who robbed her home. BTW, the guy who did it was on bail for being arrested while on parole for attempted murder.

Quite a "justice system" we've got, huh?

Anyone who believes that the police are supposed to "protect and serve" are living in some alternate universe. They're supposed to try to figure out what happened after the fact, and maybe clean up the debris and blood.

I'd like to request clarification on your post if I may....would you be suggesting that the honorable, decent and hardworking majority of people in Great Britain, who have stood by us, bled with us and died with us in multiple world wars and conflicts and who have been among our closest and most stalwart allies somehow "deserve" the sort of treatment that Mr. Pither has been subjected to?

If so, why?

I am afraid as usual many on this board take the opportunity to bash us Brits stating things they have heard from others as facts which if they actually lived in Britain would find what they state is as alien to the majority of British people's attitude and experience.

Yes we do have some radicals but we also have many places where there are just decent ordinary indigenous British people.

May I also suggest that this article may well have more behind than meets the eye. At present there a big dispute between the government and police-force over pay may I suggest that the comment made by the police may well have been sour grapes and they knew who they were talking to and just wanted to cause a stir and expose a penny pinching government who want justification to a ridiculous extent by the police in how they spend their budget.

Sadly true, and an unfortunate sign of ignorance.  It's one thing to bash Socialism and the cancers that it produces but it's another thing entirely to bash the people who are being unfairly subjected to it and whose lives are being harmed by it..

Yes we do have some radicals

So do we, unfortunately

the comment made by the police may well have been sour grapes and they knew who they were talking to and just wanted to cause a stir and expose a penny pinching government who want justification to a ridiculous extent by the police in how they spend their budget.

An interesting and highly probable theory.

Stoat,

The UK has changed the focus from blaming the criminal to blaming the object. And they’ve carried this to an extreme that insults the dignity of humanity - got it? A man who stabs someone to death is sentenced to 5 - 12 years in prison and is released for good behavior in 4 years. A man who carries a knife is sentenced to five years in prison. Whoa? What’s wrong with that picture?

There’s a five year prison sentence to any British woman carrying pepper spray. Dude, you not understanding things?

When Tony Martin used a shotgun to protect his home against burglars, he was sentenced to life in prison for murder and the authorities were babbling on about how burglars have rights too and that’s how some people make their living.

Oh yeah, one of the burglars in the Martin burglary case had 200 arrests to his record. How? Easy. The authorities view the first dozen or so burglaries as kids having fun.

As for the wars, WWI prepared the way for Hitler. WWII made Europe safe for Stalin. No gain in either war - they were just a bloodbath.

England refuses to remain England. Stop living in the past, London will soon be Londonistan and there isn’t a thing we can do about it.

Oh yeah, did I tell you self-defense is illegal in England? What? You didn’t know that?

England has it coming.
