The Republican Panic [GOP Must Read]
Wall Street Journal ^ | May 15, 2008

Posted on 05/14/2008 9:26:57 PM PDT by Zakeet

If there is such a thing as a useful election defeat, then Tuesday's Republican loss in a special House election in Mississippi would qualify. Maybe this thumping in a heretofore safe GOP seat will finally scare the Members straight, or at least less crooked.

Democrats won with 54% of the vote in a district that a Republican won with 66% in 2006 and that President Bush carried in 2004 by 25 points. It was the GOP's third special election loss this year, and it has Democrats predicting that November will be another rout of 2006 proportions. Oklahoma's Tom Cole, who runs the National Republican Congressional Committee, captured the GOP reaction when he declared that "There is no district that is safe for Republican candidates."

This is the lesson Republicans should have learned in 2006, but the Members preferred to blame their failure on President Bush and Iraq. House Republicans pooh-poohed their own earmarking scandals, spending excesses and overall wallowing in the Beltway status quo. Rather than rethink their habits, they re-elected the same party leaders and even kept Jerry Lewis as their chief Appropriator. Congressman John Shadegg of Arizona is right when he says that "Since the 2006 elections, Republicans have done absolutely nothing to redefine themselves. We can't even get behind an earmark moratorium bill."

"I don’t consider myself Republican any more. I want a Conservative party."

DITTO
They left me and left me no choice. Not one dime of my money or one vote until they shape up.
If they don't shape up, then we start a "NEW" Conservative Party.

Sometimes I think I should just give up following politics and get a more relaxing hobby.

LOL You probably won't have to wait long. Either way the GOP is rendering itself into permanent minority status by virtue of its own making.

After 2008 we can go fishing, weave baskets or take up knitting.

This seems to be another case of a democrat running on a platform to the right of how sitting republicans are voting on legislature and spending.

Interesting that is comes just as some of these new yellow dog Democrats in congress are making Nanny Fran “pay as she goes” on her plan for veterans benefits. They are going to increase taxes in “millionaires” by 1/2 percent. As one rat said: “It’s $5,000, they won’t even miss it.”

Model Radio Control Aircraft is a wonderful hobby....Lol!

The GOP is sunk, financially and morally broke, they are a ship a drift without a rudder.

I am the Godfather of a beautiful adopted niece from Guatemala and G.W. Bush and his ilk called me racist for may stance against illegal immigration?

Hey GOP, that big square thing at the far end of the hall...its a door. See ya!

We can thump our chests, tear our hair out because we disapprove the way the elected Republicans are acting, but until we find and stand behind true conservatives, we’re stuck with what we have. PLUS, we reelect them, time after time, because they have the money for their reelections.

IMHO, would’nt matter. In my mind, I keep coming back to what happened to Tom Delay.....

Washington is so jammed with parasites looking for a teat...that ANY organized opposition-IOW any Conservatives-will be run out of town . Period. This, folks, is a far BIGGER problem than just one with the Republican leadership.

I think the elected Republican’s greatest problem is, they have spent so many years being led around by the democrats they cannot think of themselves as leaders. The democrats, on the other hand never, for one moment, in 1994, thought they lost their leadership.

I feel as you do. No doubt this country is in for rough seas ahead. None of these candidates give a fig about our sovereignty or about US citizens.

They are all into power and money. They don’t even care if we know they are full of BS anymore. They peddle their global lies and even though we know they should be run right out of power, we let them get away with it.

The Democrats and the GOP are both corrupt and we are going to pay. I am not afraid of who willwin. They are all the same.

I really do believe we have come to the point where people are going to have to find out the errors of their thinking the hard way.

I am done with the lesser of two evils voting. That is precisely what got us in this situation.

I am heart broken over what has happened to our great nation in the matter of 30 or so years.

Have gone from a leader in many fields to burger flippers’...

Have gone from a lender nation to a debtor nation...

...And all of it lead by the Globalist Elite that are telling us what is good for us, not what we say, but what they say at our expense.

GOP = Corporate Globalist

Rat Party = Global Socialist

...either way, US Citizens loose!

At least we have credit cards and Wal-Mart...

I totally agree with you. Unlike Michelle Obama, I WAS really proud of my country, Notice I used was.

I guess the idea has always been to knock the US status down to make it more even for a global corporate socialist world.

I got rid of my credit cards after I saw what was coming. One day these people could call in their debt. We are not in the hands of good people anymore. Their evil is on display daily on the idiot box we call TV.

A vote for McCain is an affirmed vote against freedom of speech.

A vote for McCain is an affirmed vote for amnesty.

A vote for McCain is an affirmed vote for cap-and-trade.

Should I go on?

Not voting for President is also a choice. Not a good one, but no worse than affirming one’s support for the avowed stances taken by the R candidate, McCain.

Why do maverick-supporters have so many problems with maverick R voters?

I'm with you...and none of the current 3rd party options stackup IMHO. I think that we should bck down ballot conservatives in the next election. Screw McCain. Don't vote for him if you don't want to but vote for the conservatives who are on the ticket.

If conservatives are able to come together and form a new party some of those real conservatives in Congress could give such a party instant credibility if they were to join.

There are no conservatives. There are no liberals.

There are only people more conservative than others.

I think you need to go on a trip and look at the USA. We do not need isolation. We need trade. Our economy is dependent on exports. Ohio is in decline but North Carolina and Texas and on and on are not. They are shipping stuff out of our ports at mind boggling rate.

The world runs on trade by and between the great international companies who produce and sell their products to each other and customers who insist on the best and least expensive products and services available.

Walmart is at the top of the corporate heap. They have taught the world how to buy and sell at a rate that could not have been comprehended as recent as 30 years ago. Walmart has caused the whole supply chain from the factory floor to their check out cash register to adapt and evolve. The transformation is truly world wide as collective sales of chocolate bar in American Walmart stores auto-trigger purchase orders to replace the stock with orders from Belgium.

Walmart stalks the world for the best products at best prices. China is often noted, but if you actually go look, there are products from all over.

Your burger flipper line is just plain not true. We have a strong economy with a strong manufacturing base and need trade to thrive. Go to Charleston, or perhaps Norfolk or Savannah and visit the port. You will find the volume of outbound containers of goods astounding.

“I am heart broken over what has happened to our great nation in the matter of 30 or so years.”

It is astounding, isn’t it? We were warned back then too about commies and socialists infiltrating from within to destroy this nation (as far back as the 50’s as you may recall)- but we (and in some cases, our parents) blew that off as the rantings of the tinfoil crowd:
Never gonna happen! Americans won’t stand for it!

Well...guess what?

I wonder if any of the GOP leadership read this website?

I would love to see what their strategy is for the fall. The lack of any message to the campaign troops nationwide is disturbing.

Surely, they can see there is a great dissatisfaction with the current slate of Republican candidate’s left leaning politics.

It seems they are unwilling to change and will go down with the ship.
