GOP Stunned By Loss in Mississippi

In a major blow to national Republicans, a Mississippi congressional seat that once voted for President Bush by a twenty-five point margin elected a Democrat on Tuesday. Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers beat out Republican candidate Greg Davis, the mayor of Southaven, by a 54%-46% margin, a spread that several Republican strategists on Capitol Hill characterized as a startling wake-up call for a party in dire straits.

Voters cast ballots for the fourth time in three months for the seat, vacated when Republican Roger Wicker was appointed to fill the remainder of Senator Trent Lott's term. After winning the primary and the runoff election, Childers came within 410 votes of winning the first round of the special election against Davis on April 22, beating the Republican by a 49%-46% margin.

I guess lots of erstwhile Republicans are feeling betrayed by the current face of the party. I cannot say I would be surprised or even unhappy to see McCain loose every state in the union. It is time to form a new party, at least.

Guys..we all need to be agitating for Tom Delay as head of the RNC.......

Actually that seems like a good idea - someone with some moxie for a change. However I do recall JC Watts basically saying, nicely, that he didn't agree with Delay's methods (i.e. didn't like him). I don't know what that was about.

All these stupid comments about the Rhinos and McCain are
so stupid. The problem is the RNC and the RCC.
The RNC fools were appointed by BUSH not McCain. These idiots along with the RCC appointed by Boehner created this mess .They are letting the local repub trash each other in the primaries and spend lots of money while the Dems are hand picking there Repub look alike clones. So, in the local elections the Dems are untouched product while the Repub have been trashed ! The same thing is going on here in Rocklin Ca , the Repu are trashing each other with local ads while the Dems have a hand picked Repub clones left untouched . The RNC and RCC have lost control !
Bush is such a passive clown , he has allowed it. THis same scenario happened in ILL , LA, and now MISS !

“That is why I’m not voting McCain this fall. Until we remove the Rhino face off of the GOP brand, our product will be in serious trouble.”

I can’t fault you for that friend. Philosophically I agree with you and detest McCain.

My game plan is to vote for him to keep Obama or Hillary out. I fugure he MIGHT appoint less liberal judges to the SCOTUS, MIGHT be more pro-gun, MIGHT be more anti-abortion and probably would be more supportive of our troops.

All three of them are soft on illegal invaders and, like the non-entity in the Oval Office, practitioners of the new religion of Global Warming/Greenism.

As for after the election, I want to find a conservative political party likely to knock the Republicans out of the box. They deserve it.

Sure thing, on two conditions:

1) If you win, I post that as my tagline for one week, same as your stipulation (heh heh you thought I wouldn’t read the fine print, didn’t you?)

2) I don’t stipulate WHICH side of the Mississippi.

The country is pissed at Republicans for a multitude of reasons, some relating to rino politics (spending, immigration) some not (Iraq). The economy is also a big factor.

This may, or may not be the reason and it is dangerous to accept that premise at face value without facts to back it up.

This reason does not hold water. Why would anyone with a half a brain think that a DEmocrat is going to spend less or be tougher on illegal immigration or do a better job with the economy?

They can't believe that because that same person with half a brain knows that is wrong.

There has to be much more to it than this reason that keeps getting stated over and over.

I believe the herd mentality has a lot to do with it and these same voters are brain dead and falsely believe the hype they hear on the MSM. We must be better at educating the public.

We need to do more promoting of the party platform. This would accomplish two things. It will create true Republican converts and also encourage candidates and elected lawmakers to toe the party line more closely.

“Welcome to the United Socialists of America.”

Maybe I’m completely Dead wrong but it seems like European Socialism is better than what we have now: A free market that mostly benefits the super rich and socialism that mostly hurts the middle class. A completely free market would be better but that’s not going to happen.

Instead of complaining about Bush, McCain, the RCC, the RNC, etc. (and I know, I’ve done my share), why don’t we actually DO something about it? Why don’t movement conservatives get organised and take back the party?

When will people stop thinking that is still is RIGHT vs. LEFT?

Washington is controlled not by it's people or the voters. The goal is to bring this country down to the rest of the world economically.

You think in 30 years that the lifestyle of the middle class will even resemble what it is today?

You are all speaking the same stupid crap as 40 years ago. The game has changed. And by voting against the evil left wing, you have now created the new evil left wing. It's called Republican.

You will all vote for Juan McGore and get the cake that you all deserve. People are just plain stupid.

"The GOP has used fear to persuade voters for too long. The fear of liberals being elected lost it’s sting when the GOP moved towards the center and beyond and became democrat-lite. It wasn’t announced as a planned ideological shift but that is how it is being perceived by the base who remember what a conservative party should represent. The current GOP is not conservative."

I completely agree. The message "Vote for Republicans so the Democrats wont win" stopped working when the Republicans abandoned their commitment to smaller government. That is not to say that there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans, because there is, although the difference between them has shrunk has shrunk. Unfortunately this has not happened by the Democrats moving closer to the Republicans, but by the Republicans moving closer to the Democrats.

Add to that our turning our back on God. One big issue that NEVER gets talked about on talk radio is homosexuality invading our schools. Our problems appear to run deeper than an election cycle.

“I didn’t say Davis was a RINO.........”

I agree with everything you said. The cap-and-trade thing is really scary. It’s so obviously designed to make the middle class poorer that people should be burning down the capital because of it. I guess they’ve learned that they can keep us entertained and fat and we’ll give them anything.

The problem is the RNC and the RCC.

No, the problem is republicans in general. They abandoned Bush on the war when the going got tough. They have virtually disappeared from the public scene since then. In an effort to shield themselves from negative feedback associated with the war they became democrats on the spending side of the equation. Bush bears a lot of blame as well since he didn't demonstrate a lot of competence in handling the aftermath of Katrina nor was he able to defend at all against the relentless MSM attacks. I'm sure that was on the mind of Mississippi voters.

And then republicans chose McCain as our standard bearer which closed shut the wallets of guys like me who in the past opened those wallets come election time.

I'll probably vote for McCain come November but my wallet will stay closed. Republicans will wander the desert for another 40 years or so, much past the time where I'll be able to open an eye no less my wallet.

"I’ve seen a lot of similar posts here, i.e. “Good! Let the GOP go down in flames so that real conservatives can rebuild it!” But do people who share this view understand that a Liberal take-over of the government will doom the country to 20-30 years of rule that will end private ownership of firearms, double everyone’s taxes, destroy the military, allow Islamopsychos to take-over large parts of the country, and perhaps even end the country as we know it? Just how are conservatives to recover from that, or even survive at all?"

You're kidding, right?

We already have a "liberal take-over of the government".

Ownership of firearms already has been ended in many areas of the country.

Islamopsychos (and any other illegal) have already taken over large parts of the country.

Consrvatives survive?

You are joking!
