All indications are the Democrats will pick up seats in both the House and Senate, with the Senate likely being a couple of RHINOs away from the magic 60. McCain is no Reagan but he's the only thing standing in the way of the most liberal Senator in Senate becoming President with a clear majority in Congress and at a critical time with decisions to be made on the war on terror, the war in Iraq, heath care, taxes, illegal immigration and likely the Supreme Court.
Sometimes you do have to pick the lesser of two evils. This is one of them. I am fully aware that I'll be let down by McCain on some key issues but I know I'll be let down on all of them if Obama is President.
No, a tax increase is easy to see - does the tax rate go up or down?
Apparently, you cannot see that with amnesty. What the immigration plan called for was NOT amnesty, it did not meet either the textbook definition of amnesty (which a tax increase would be easy to tell), nor does it even come close to an actual amnesty as granted by the government (either for tax purposes, registration, or illegal immigrants).
Apparently moving the goalposts is the “McPain SUCKS!” wing of the conservative movement’s modus operandi.
So once again - define amnesty. Once you get that down, then we can talk. I’ve told you what I believe it is - as defined by Merriam Webster.
Short of that, you’re just bloviating for the sake of hearing your own echoes.
Don't call it "amnesty," dammit! As per the latest talking points handed down from on high at Team Juan Central, we're going to be defusing the entire issue, once and for all, by resolutely referring to... to... well, look; you know, all right?... as "slow, soft belly rubs," from now on.
Think how much easier it will be to sell gullible voters out there on the notion of transforming their own beloved country into just a big, sunny bedroom suburb of Mexico, once we start framing the debate our way from now on! "John McCain wants to give all illegal aliens amnesty" will, henceforth, become: "John McCain wants to give all illegal aliens amnesty slow, soft belly rubs!" It's genius, I tell you! Absolute GENIUS -- !!! ;)
Vote McCAIN! |

He Sucks Less! |
Define amnesty.
Or what is your plan for dealing with illegals here - let’s compare/contrast your plan with the actual proposed legislation.
Man enough to try it?
The election of Obama might be bad, but it would also be the salutary call to the Bushes, MacCains and other spoiled patriticans at the country club to grow up, start doing what's right for the country and get back to their conservative principles. They can whine all they want about conservatives not supporting their boy MacCain, but as good capitalists, they need to realize that if they're not giving the consumer what he/she wants, he/she isn't going to buy it.
Well, they HAVE already shown a penchant for invasion.
We could send our illegal aliens to the ME to begin colonizing there...and why not? The Muzzies are sending shock troops into the heart of Christendom, why shouldn't we send emissaries of progress and enlightenment into the benighted muzzie world?
"Man enough" to have already asked and answered, re: #209.
"Reading Is FUNdamental!"
Muzzieworld... invaded by an unending horde of gardeners, roofers, drywallers and pool boys.
Now, that's an image, that is. ;)
Then no man at all. I see no definition there. So be it...
Then "no man at all," indeed. LOL!!!
“I guess it makes you feel better.”
Pretty much I will be able to shave the next day without the pressing urge to slice open my own throat.
Under your definition, the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 that Reagan signed would not have been considered “amnesty” either—although most everyone recognized it as such.
If Obama is elected, you'll feel better than if McCain is elected? I find that one tough to relate to. I'm not a huge McCain fan by any stretch. Hell, there's very few politicians I like. But I find the choice this year pretty straightforward, just as I did in 04.
In 00, I took the route you're taking, and voted 3rd party. I'm glad I did, but only because it taught me firsthand what a pointless waste of time it is.
As badly as GWB as managed things, he's still better than the alternative, and some good came of it that wouldn't have with a DIM in charge. Same holds true here.
What you are doing is political suicide.
1987 Flashback... to Reagan’s “Not an Amnesty” amnesty:
Starting in June, employers will have to ask all job applicants for documents to verify that they are either United States citizens or aliens authorized to work in this country.
Under the rules for the amnesty program, illegal aliens may be given a six-month work permit while the government reviews their applications for legal status. If an application is approved, the alien will receive a ``temporary resident card’’ authorizing employment in this country, as well as foreign travel.
Illegal aliens who do not apply or do not qualify for legal status could be deported.
The rules also include these provisions:
Illegal aliens applying for legal status must show that they have maintained ``continuous physical presence’’ in the United States since Nov. 6, 1986. An absence of 30 days or less is allowed if it was authorized by the Immigration and Naturalization Service for ``legitimate emergency or humanitarian purposes.’’
An alien who submits false documents or makes false statements in support of an application for legal status may be deported or prosecuted.
Illegal aliens will be ineligible for legal status if they have been convicted of a felony committed in any country, or three or more misdemeanors committed in the United States.
An illegal alien may not receive legal status if he appears likely to become a ``public charge.’’ Aliens may be asked for evidence to show whether they are ``self-supporting,’’ whether they have a ``history of employment’’ or whether they have been on welfare.
Male aliens 18 to 26 must register with the Selective Service System.
Illegal aliens who qualify for legal status will first become temporary residents. After 18 months in that status, they will have one year in which to apply for permanent residence. After five years as permanent residents, they may apply for citizenship.
“If Obama is elected, you’ll feel better than if McCain is elected?”
Same sh*t, different wrapper. No I will feel better on election day voting for the candidate of MY choice and no, I really don’t give a crap about your party and its’ power.
If you’re going to criticize at least be accurate. I’m not the one who inserted Reagan into the argument; I was responding to a poster who did.
The reality is my principles, and the principles of every conservative, have already lost this election. Some of us are willing to face that incontrovertible fact. Others grasp at straws and cling to false hope. I’m working to elect conservatives downticket to blunt whichever socialist wins the WH in November. THAT is the sane conservative response to this untenable situation.
That's simply incorrect. It's irrefutably incorrect. On national defense, on taxes, on judges. Total bs.
No I will feel better on election day voting for the candidate of MY choice
Have you ever voted 3rd party before? I'm just curious, because I have, and I'm wondering if you really understand what it's like.
and no, I really dont give a crap about your party and its power.
My party? I'm a registered Republican, it's true. That's because you can't vote in either primary as an Independent in NJ. You have to pick one. So I picked the GOP, for what should be obvious reasons. And those are the same reasons why I intend to vote for the GOP nominee--McCain--this fall. He's the better choice. It's a total no brainer.
(... on the grounds that... you know... some folks are stick-stone-bone stupid enough to swallow damned near ANYthing, really...) ;)
And feed it to others, to boot! Forcibly!
