MY 'RACIAL HARASSMENT' NIGHTMARE
NY Post ^ | May 9, 2008 | KEITH JOHN SAMPSON

Posted on 05/09/2008 11:19:11 AM PDT by lowbridge

IN November, I was found guilty of "racial harassment" for reading a public-li brary book on a university campus.

The book was Todd Tucker's "Notre Dame vs. the Klan: How the Fighting Irish Defeated the Ku Klux Klan I was reading it on break from my campus job as a janitor. The same book is in the university library.

Tucker recounts events of 1924, when the loathsome Klan was a dominant force in Indiana - until it went to South Bend to taunt the Irish Catholic students at the University of Notre Dame.

When the KKK tried to rally, the students confronted them. They stole Klan robes and destroyed their crosses, driving the KKK out of town in a downpour.

I read the historic encounter and imagined myself with these brave Irish Catholics, as they street-fought the Klan. (I'm part-Irish, and was raised Catholic.)

But that didn't stop the Affirmative Action Office of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis from branding me as a detestable Klansman.

They didn't want to hear the truth. The office ruled that my "repeatedly reading the book . . . constitutes racial harassment in that you demonstrated disdain and insensitivity to your co-workers."

A friend reacted to the finding with, "That's impossible!" He's right. You can't commit racial harassment by reading an anti-Klan history.

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

I would dispute an assertion that the left and PC forces are imaginary.

I apologize if I didn't make myself clear.

The left and PC forces are the poison, their endless series of hobgoblins are the delivery system.

In no sense could these quacks at ND consider themselves liberal, liberals having degenerated into cult minders. Put the two accusers up on a dais to explain their world view would be akin to putting a crazy street preacher up there, same difference.

You can't commit racial harassment by reading an anti-Klan history.

You can if you're white.

Niggardly is a Norwegian word. So is ombudsman but it is being changed to ombuds-person so as not to offend all Americans except for those of Norwegian descent. Who should “my peoples” complain to now to make this grave injustice right? I’ve written a song about this and the words we can’t say anymore. I really let it out about all sorts of stuff, like being warned by an NPR host I was listening to last week that the word fag was coming up. It was ok for the homosexual author to use it in his essay, he told us, but we should be warned because we may not want out kids think it was ok. Just before that the host called himself a “grown ass man” Now kids all over America are talking about what they want to be when they become “grown ass” woman and men too.
I really express myself, tell it like it is in my song, it’s a sort of auditory memorial to the first ammendment. It’s an instrumental piece. I say all the words in the privacy, freedom and safety of my head as I play it on the baritone sax. Does anybody know if NPR accepts those kinds of contributions for their show “This American Life”?

The Campus Left wanted to keep him from reading even a politically correct book because it thought it was a book that incited racism. Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.

His Union Rep was in the tank. There is a concept in Labor Law called "Fair Representation." This requires the Union to represent you in any grievance and be informed of the particulars of that grievance.

My kid has a similar lack of representation from the Teamsters, I filed a complaint with the NRLB in his name, I wasted 16 years as a Union Activist in a Large Electrical Union and an Assistant Business Agent before I got disgusted and jumped into management. The kid won.

I recall reading that the KKK was created by the Democratic Party in the 19th century to use intimidation tactics to keep black voters away from the polls; at the time, support for the Republicans among black voters was close to 100%.

Ah, yes. The DC diversity guy. I remember the details now. The clip I recall was from a DC diversity council woman who wouldn't accept his apology. I don't remember her exact punchline, but I recall it was something like "It doesn't matter what the word reaaally means. What matters is how it makes me feeeeeeeeeeel."

So we aren't only banned from saying words which some ignoramaus might misunderstand, we are also responsible for how we make them feeeeeeeeeel.

I thought “niggardly” was Dutch and “ombudsman” was Danish- if I were a Dutchman or a Dane your claim would seriously offend me ;-)

Klan power in the South didn’t wane until Blacks became a consistent Democrat Party vote in the late ‘60’s. If blacks start voting over 30% black again, look for a Klan resurgence.

It was DC city govt. and the guy resigned quickly because there was such a firestorm from ignorant morons who don’t know that the word “niggardly” has absolutely no etymological connection with that “other” word .....

“I used the word ‘niggardly’ in reference to my administration of a fund,” Howard said in a written statement yesterday. “Although the word, which is defined as miserly, does not have any racial connotations, I realize that staff members present were offended by the word.

“I immediately apologized,” Howard said. “ . . . I would never think of making a racist remark. I regret that the word I did use offended anyone.”

When Howard, who is white, noticed the reaction to his use of the word, he apologized to his three-member staff, which is made up of two blacks and another white. It is unclear which two employees he was addressing when he used the word.

From same WaPo article I linked above:

"The Barnhard Dictionary of Etymology traces the origins of "niggardly" to the 1300s and the words nig and nigon, meaning miser, in Middle English. It also notes possible earlier origins in languages including Old Icelandic, Old English and Middle High German. There is no mention of any racial connotation."
