Around 40,000 Zimbabwean farm workers have had to flee as a result of the violence inflicted by Robert Mugabes mobs since the countrys general election in March, a union leader said today.
The Movement for Democratic Change also said that the violence is getting worse, with three of its supporters shot dead earlier this week.
Farm workers, whose livelihoods have been destroyed since Mr Mugabe launched his assault on white-owned land in 2000, are often supporters of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.
Forcing them to leave their homes is one of the objectives of the campaign of violence launched by the ruling Zanu-PF party. If they are not in the district where they are registered when the second round of the presidential election finally happens, they will be unable to vote against Mr Mugabe.
With only 23,000 votes amounting to one per cent of the total, and the opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai officially taking 47.9 per cent in the first round, even a few thousand fleeing could make a significant difference.
"Since the elections we have recorded a total of 40,000 people who have been displaced, said Gertrude Hambira, general secretary of the General Agriculture and Plantation Workers Union of Zimbabwe.
"Our members and their families have been left homeless. They have been attacked by a group of militias wearing army uniforms.
"They have been accused of voting for the opposition. Most of them are either on the roadside or sheltering at some farms.
The Movement for Democratic Changes secretary-general Tendai Biti said that Mr Mugabe was executing his coup detat against the constitution.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has yet to announce when the presidential run-off will take place, and a senior observer said it could take as long as a year.
Marwick Khumalo, the head of the Pan African Parliament observer mission, said the ZEC chairman George Chiweshe had to him the election would be organised within the shortest possible time and this would not be longer than 12 months.
Zim Ping.

What about the 70’s-mantra “Majority Rule”?
Not too worry, the UN is planning a multi-billion dollar renovation of their office.
Waiting for Carter’s statement on the Zimbabwe election........waiting.............waiting..............
Africa news — the more things change, the more they stay the same. Ho-hum.
Another fine example of “Home Rule” in Africa...
Notice? You hear no complaints from the Leftists or the U.N...
They’re too busy complaining about the poor conditions for the lunatic Islamists living in lap of luxury and consideration at Gitmo..
