At least they're open about it: the New York Times disdains Supreme Court justices who hew to the principles upon which this country was founded. The Times's admission came in the course of an editorial calling on Obama and Clinton to put aside their bickering and focus on beating John McCain. That is vital, in the Times's view, given McCain's pledge to nominate Supreme Court justices in the mold of John Roberts and Samuel Alito.
Writes the Times [emphasis added]:
Mr. McCain predictably criticized liberal judges, vowed strict adherence to the Founders views and promised to appoint more judges in the mold of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito. That is just what the country does not need.

Thank goodness for your post. |
I occasionally need a reminder that the NYT determines the principles upon which this country is governed.
Of course. The NYT wants SCOTUS to be a super-legislature answerable to no one except the left wing “elites”. NYT has no faith in Americans, no lve for this country and no loyalty to our Republic.

They’re just doing the journalistic work patriotic, God fearing, Americans won’t do.

Hopefully the NYT will be flushed down the MSM toilet soon - one less loony leftist platform to spew anti american/socialistic @rap.
My pleasure. It can be pretty dreary reading through the Times editorials every day, but I’m occasionally rewarded when, as here, they let down the veil and expose what they really think of this country.
The NYT-crowd desires expedient application of au courant legal concepts WITHOUT the burden of looking at precedent or those dead white guys who wrote that ever so confining Constitution. They are the equivalent of the mobocracy of the French Revolution which sent so many to 'Madame Guillotine' based upon current opinion rather than rule of law.
You are right on the money. It is the legacy of Robespierre and not John Locke that informs the Times' world view. They have no use for the sort of objective standards and eternal truths that stand in the way of building a "better society".
In that op-ed the NYT actually called conservative judges “activists”...
Its getting near the time we hit the reset button on this country.
Although it's not surprising, it is certainly strange to see the editors of the once-reputable NY Times state their derision for the founding principles of this nation in such a straightforward manner. This one is a keeper!
As always, thanks for the pings.
Quite a number of separate issues could be resolved.
I’ve argued with leftists that tried to assert that any overturning of previous rulings is “activist”. All they really mean is that any judge that will overturn RvW has to be kept off the bench.
Of course, they can’t answer to the fact that Dred Scott and Plessy v Ferguson were bad rulings that needed to be overturned.
They don’t seem to even grasp the idea of original intent, or give it absolutely no standing in their ideology.
If the Constitution only means what 5 out of 9 robed people in the USSC say it does, we’re living under an oligarchy, not a Constitutional republic.
The New York Times and the other leftist media outlets have done plenty to destroy the public perception of the Constitution. Most Americans are clueless when comes to understanding the ideals and principles written in the nation’s founding document. In fact, most do not know the difference between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Many people even believe that the Constitution set up a welfare state of entitlements, which they claim they have a right to. Therefore, people ignorantly think their rights are being violated when there is any attempt to reform welfare, farm subsidies, Social Security, and other supposed entitlements.
Aided by the socialist media, the American people have lost their sense of history and political values. We now live in an age when the Constitution is only occasionally dusted off when it can be used to support the power elite. Anything in the Constitution that is contrary to the power elite’s desires goes ignored. What remains of the Bill of Rights is only there because of the benefits the left are still able derive from it while they go about destroying it.
The whole situation is depressing.
Please do not fail to also credit/blame to our educational system. When you have people coming out of the ‘Ivy League’ who have these inabilities to differentiate between the Constitution and the Declaration AFTER 4 years of ‘Higher’ education, sheesh! I only cite the ‘Ivies’ because of their high cost, competitive entrance requirements and historical influence of their graduates.
Thanks, Lancey. As you say, it’s not a surprise that the Times would harbor such sentiments, but to see the paper express them so openly is still shocking.
I have first hand knowledge on how pathetic our higher education system is. I know professors who could not teach a dog how to whiz on a car tire, but they could teach the dog how to lie about it.
The high schools are turning out students that can not read or write. Several of the two year colleges in my state have added nearly a full third year of remedial courses to their curriculum. Educators are wringing their hands and trying to come up with ways to solve the problem, but all they seem to come up with are trendy phrases and pointless programs that only make the situation worse. What I have come to believe is that ignorance is exactly what the powered elite wants. Most educators haven’t realized it yet, but they are just handing out the bread and starring in the circus.
