U.S. Frustrated By Elusive Justice Served to USS Cole Plotters

It's been called "the forgotten attack" but it's one of the worst terrorist attacks in U.S. history.
Eight years after the USS Cole was attacked by a motorboat packed with explosives, all of the six men convicted of the strike have escaped from prison, or been freed by Yemeni officials.
Seventeen sailors were killed and 40 more wounded in the strike, blamed on Usama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.
Jamal al-Badawi, who helped organize the Cole plot, has reportedly escaped from Yemeni prisons twice. He is supposedly back in jail now, but the Washington Post reported that he has been spotted at his home and is apparently able to come and go around town as he pleases.
Another Cole defendant, Fahd al-Quso, reportedly was freed last year.
Two others, described as main plotters, are being held in held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, out of reach of U.S. courts. One other defendant may or may not be in prison in Yemen and the other three others apparently were freed.
Most of those believed responsible were rounded up, put on trial, put in a Yemeni prison. Two years later, most of them tunneled out of prison.
All this frustrates FBI agents who worked the case.
"After we worked day and night to bring justice to the victims and prove that these al Qaeda operatives were responsible, we're back to square one," FBI lead investigator, Ali Soufan told the Post. "Do the [Yemenis] have laws over there or not? It's really frustrating what's happening."
FBI Director Robert Muller flew to Yemen in April, the paper said, to demand that Yemen extradite both men to face charges in New York. So far, Yemen has said no.

I figure that someday that we'll never know about some group of men from So-Cal or Virginia may get a call to visit those little rag heads and deal with them.
The navy has a long memory. I'm not afraid of anything on two legs but having a group of SEAL's on my trail would make me very............ concerned. ...... to never fall asleep in the same bed for more than one night and to keep moving..... and praying.

They should have leveled the damn harbor and let those who survived deal with the bombers on their own.
The USS Cole did not sink!! She’s on duty as we speak. Long live the Cole and those that sail on her.
This happened in the days of "the wall" imposed by Reno, Gorelick and Clinton, remember? If you read the WaPo today, history has miraculously morphed into -- surprise! -- it's all Bush's fault.
If you read this 2001 Frontline report, it's quite a different story, including the fact that lead FBI investigator of the Cole, John O'Neill, was killed on 9/11, soon after he quit the FBI and took a job as head of security for the twin towers.
What's even worse is that two of the Cole bombers are now in Gitmo, which all three of our esteemed presidential candidates want to close -- so there's a good chance that those two will wind up in a US Court, with all the privileges afforded to a US citizen. The whole incident has been a national disgrace, up until the present day, but it began under Clinton.
I am surprised the FBI is surprised. To anybody familiar with this, it looked like a bad idea from the very beginning-—like putting the rabbits in charge of the lettuce.

Post a notice in all major newspapers saying that we will no longer wait for justice in the courts of countries like Yemen.
Just stop all taxpayer aid to Yemen.

The point here is that a ‘Sink the COLE’ operation was definately put into effect by terrorists on the very eve of a U.S. Presidential Debate that Democrat Presidential Candidate GORE was due to lose. Just like he did the 1st TV Debate.
‘Sink the COLE’ Disaster ..just like a ‘Sink the MAINE’ Disaster long ago.. and a 2nd TV Debate probably would have been canceled by the League of Women Voters out of respect for the newly fallen.
Just like the League of Women Voters almost did the 3rd Presidential TV Debate in St. Louis MO, that GORE was also due to lose, the day after the then Governor of Missouri’s small plane suddenly went down in bad weather the very day before that scheduled TV Debate.
