At least 40 young men who drowned may have died by far more sinister means — serial killings at the hands of a national gang that revels in murdering young men and leaving smiley-face markings at the scene, a team of retired New York City police detectives and criminal justice investigators said Monday.
They believe the victims, including University of Minnesota student Chris Jenkins and Fordham University student Patrick McNeill, didn't accidentally drown but were actually killed by members of the so-called "Smiley Face Gang," KSTP in St. Paul reported.
A smiley-face symbol was found painted at some of the drowning locations — in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa, they told the station.
"They're telling you here that they're into evil, they're very happy as most serial killers are," retired NYPD Det. Kevin Gannon said to KSTP. "They're content with their work and what they're doing and the fact that they're thwarting the police."
Jenkins' body was discovered in the Mississippi River about four months after he disappeared in 2003. To police, his death looked like an accidental fall after a night of drinking.
McNeill drowned in New York City in 1997, also after bar-hopping.
The task force that formed to solve the crimes believes a national crime network has killed at least 40 men — mostly white college students and 20-somethings, often with high grades and impressive athletic records — in about 10 different states.
The team investigated 89 separate cases dating back a decade and said it had connected 40 of them through a variety of evidence — including matching sets of gang graffiti.

I don't think so. This is too organized, well planned and successful so far. Young thugs screw up and talk too much. (just like biker gangs). They are more cowboy than Hannibal Lecter. Word would be on the streets and there would be a lot more clues. Hard to make much of a guess with the skimpy details we have other than there's a good chance it's more than one person. And that's not a given at all.

The origin of the smiley face is actually an insurance company. The company failed to copyright the design, so other folks printed it up.
Similarly, the origin of the MTV logo of the modified moon walk, is because MTV needed an inexpensive logo and gubmint film footage isn’t copyrighted.

Each of these drownings is a tragedy, but I don’t think there is any evil smiley face gang. Young men are prone to drinking too much. When there is a river nearby, some end up drowning. Smiley faces are probably among the most common graffiti.

Not meaning to be a wise acre but can't they (the authorities) tell? Won't there be marks on the body? Signs of a struggle? Facial expression of the deceased? Something? Sure the victims might have been drunk but everyone of them so drunk that self-preservation didn't kick in? Surely not all the bodies were only found when it was too late to look for these signs and clues.

The people who died in the LaCrosse, WI area did not appear to be gay. One of the drowning victims was a popular athlete who disappeared after a night of drinking with friends.
I’m also very skeptical of the MS-13, jihadist, black nationalist ideas, since people like that would be memorable in a small town like LaCrosse.
There has been a lot of speculation about these drownings being the work of a serial killer, but there hasn’t been much to connect the deaths. Most of the victims had BACs above .20 when their bodies were found.
