At least 40 young men who drowned may have died by far more sinister means — serial killings at the hands of a national gang that revels in murdering young men and leaving smiley-face markings at the scene, a team of retired New York City police detectives and criminal justice investigators said Monday.
They believe the victims, including University of Minnesota student Chris Jenkins and Fordham University student Patrick McNeill, didn't accidentally drown but were actually killed by members of the so-called "Smiley Face Gang," KSTP in St. Paul reported.
A smiley-face symbol was found painted at some of the drowning locations — in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa, they told the station.
"They're telling you here that they're into evil, they're very happy as most serial killers are," retired NYPD Det. Kevin Gannon said to KSTP. "They're content with their work and what they're doing and the fact that they're thwarting the police."
Jenkins' body was discovered in the Mississippi River about four months after he disappeared in 2003. To police, his death looked like an accidental fall after a night of drinking.
McNeill drowned in New York City in 1997, also after bar-hopping.
The task force that formed to solve the crimes believes a national crime network has killed at least 40 men — mostly white college students and 20-somethings, often with high grades and impressive athletic records — in about 10 different states.
The team investigated 89 separate cases dating back a decade and said it had connected 40 of them through a variety of evidence — including matching sets of gang graffiti.

I don’t know why it necessarily has to be a gang. Why couldn’t it be a lone nut? If it was a gang, somebody would’ve turned and ratted by now.

Though I’ve often wondered if the cases involving male college students involved gay men, I can’t necessarily assume this is the case. As for trolling interstates, I’ve heard that these kids are often in bars when last seen and while anonymous sex is more popular with gays than straights, if you’re ALREADY IN A BAR, no need to go to some rest stop, if that’s what you were implying.
Could just be lone kids being too trusting or too drunk to stop one or a few killers.
Perhaps the word gang was ill-chosen. It easily could be a partnership and just like Charles Ng and his partner (can’t remember, the other guy was probably the ‘leader’) there is no reason why anyone ‘rats out’ anyone else when they could face the death penalty and there is no evidence.
There is taunting authorities or ‘marking a kill’ and truly going publicizing one’s work when it comes to these things. This smacks more of the intimate taunt of the cops than an attempt to ‘reach out’ to the public, therefore, they may have far more discipline than the average killer.

There is now some suspicion that this gang or individual may be connected to the disappearance of a Middlebury student and the drowning of a SUNY Plattsburgh student.

There were some articles in the news around that time that four students had disappeared from various places in Minnesota and Wisconsin within a very short period. I always wondered if anything more was discovered about them.

Damn. You beat me to it. BTW, did you know that the director of "300" is doing the live-action version of "Watchmen"? The pre-publicity photos look awesome, but being a big fan of the book, I'm cautiously optimistic.

I’ve been speculating on this situation for a very long time. There IS something afoot. (However, if FOX breaks the story, I’ll eat my hat, LOL!) What I don’t understand is all of the MOTHERS of these young men remaining silent. If MY kid was one of these victims, and there are LOTS of them, I’d be raising Heaven and Hell to figure this one out.
I still say we need Ann Rule on the case. She’ll have this wrapped up in the time it takes to read a mass-market paperback. ;)
