Well said. Fear is a very bad place from which to elect a mentally shaky guy president.

An irrational fear of Hillary Clinton in the first place is why we are stuck with McCain. The Republicans are a party of weenies.

A real conservative wouldn’t think McCain would be anything but a very lousy President.

Since McCain has the nomination now, what is your point?

The point, as always, is to be informed. Now you can go back to sleep.

The only angle to consider with Bob Barr is the losing angle.

Whoever the Christians support has the best chance of a win- Be it Bob Barr, or more likely Dr. Alan Keyes, if he gets the CP nomination... Which ever, what ever, without the Christians, not to mention the rest of the conservative camps, it would seem that McCain is the most likely to lose.

Eventually creating new U.S. voters out of illegal immigrants will truly kill off both the Republican Party and all of U.S. conservatism. Only another eventual civil war where conservatives win could truly turn things around for U.S. conservatism.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but I honestly believe Reagan was the last hurrah for conservatism.

All that's left now is a rear guard action trying to drag out the decline and fall of the American experiment for as long as possible.

Benjamin Franklin is oft quoted as replying to a question about what kind of government we were being given with “A Republic, if you can keep it.” Well, we've fumbled and now The Republic is in the hands of liberal, socialists, or to just cut to the quick, communists.

They aren't exactly known for using restraint in conquest or being compassionate to their foes.

Are Clinton/Obama acceptable to you? Are they any steadier or saner than he? Are they more reliable or trustworthy, are they more capable than he? Think about it!

Yes, I am afraid to elect any of the others opposite McCain! I may not like him much. He is temperamental. He is unpredictable. But with the leadership in the Congress/Senate, yes, I"m afraid for any of the others to get in.

They would get what they want pretty much whenever. Look what happened in Venezuela! They might not get everything they want all at once. But they will get it, and get away with only Lord knows what!

So that is why I would elect that “mentally shaky guy” president!

Uh, who are you, the gatekeeper for Free Republic? Are you the arbiter as to who is a real conservative or not? Or better yet, are you the one who decides who gets on Free Republic? I don’t think so! Suppose you let the owner and the moderators decide that?

With a lifetime conservative rating of 82% it looks rather silly to call McCain and out-and-out liberal.

That is totally misleading and you know it.

In 2006 he was rated 60% by the ACU.

His record in 2007 was even further to the left.

John McAmnesty has been trending to the left since he lost in 2000 and decided the only way he was going to win the Presidency was to throw away his stellar conservative past and run to the left.

He has been rated a C- by the NRA and an F by Gun-Owners of America during the same time frame.

One of his best friends is Arnold and that in and of itself speaks volumes.

The only way you don't call McCain a liberal, or at least a moderate Liberal is if you yourself either do not understand what it means to be a conservative (Social, Fiscal, and Military) or you are part of the GOP trying to redefine what it means to be a conservative.

>>Here’s the vote on RBG 96-3-1, there are conservatives who voted for her....<<

I remain one of McCain’s fiercest critics on FR, but I think you are right about the Ginsburg vote. It’s one of the weakest arguments against McCain.

On the other hand, the danger that McCain will be too eager to please Dems on future judicial confirmations is a real concern.

He is a conservative on the WOT and spending

He is only have a conservative on fiscal issues.

Remember, he voted against President Bush's tax cuts calling them tax-cuts for the rich.

That statement in, and of itself, should tell you he is a liberal.

Conservatives, at least the real ones, place the safety of the country and the free world first. And they are mature enough to realize that all great presidents are not pure conservatives.

Conservatives are also intelligent beings judging the actions of candidates against their rhetoric.

Given McAmnesty's record, we no he is not even close to being a partial conservative, much less a pure conservative.

Being intelligent beings we realize, given the liberal history of John McCain, we can count on more of the same. Especially since his stubborness (See his stubborn refusal to be honest about McCain-Kennedy being Amnesty) is legendary.

For anyone day-dreaming that somehow he will see the light, you need to grow-up.

Thanks for the mention, however, you must remember to refer to them as MovementConservative called them, my Hate Points.

When I read that, I laughed for a long time.

First time I ever had facts called Hate Language by somebody touting himself as a conservative.

Duly noted, facts are hate.

War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength.

George Orwell was truly a prophet.

On the other hand, the danger that McCain will be too eager to please Dems on future judicial confirmations is a real concern.

The next Senate will be in the neighborhood of 55-45 in favor of the Democrats. They know this is the swing vote on abortion and a dozen other issues. Compounding it will be the pressure to appoint a woman, especially if the seat is Ginsberg's. The Democratic leadership will apply all pressure to block a conservative.

This is where McCain's Gang of 14 comes in, along with his conviction that elections have consequences and a President has a right to appoint Justices which match his philosophy. McCain is the most likely of all the Republican contenders to get a conservative Justice seated. It won't be one who wears conservatism on their sleeve but it will be one with a solid judicial record.

McCain has not been bitterly partisan on the SC and it will be difficult for the Democrats to hold all of the rank and file to a partisan agenda.

McCain’s “philosophy” is too pro-illegal for me. If he can get SCOTUS justices confirmed, will they start inventing new “rights” for illegals?

You might say, “No, at CPAC he said he liked ‘judges who enforce, and not make, our laws.’” But he is already moving away from his CPAC promise to secure the border, so I have my doubts.
