Biblical Scholars Challenge Pelosi's 'Scripture' Quote
CNSNEWS ^ | April 24, 2008 | Pete Winn

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is fond of quoting a particular passage of Scripture. The quote, however, does not appear in the Bible and is "fictional," according to biblical scholars.

In her April 22 Earth Day news release, Pelosi said, "The Bible tells us in the Old Testament, 'To minister to the needs of God's creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.' On this Earth Day, and every day, let us pledge to our children, and our children's children, that they will have clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature."

Cybercast News Service repeatedly queried the speaker's office for two days to determine where the alleged Bible quote is found. Thus far, no one has responded.

Distinguished biblical scholars, however, cast doubt on the existence of the passage.

John J. Collins, the Holmes professor of Old Testament criticism and interpretation at Yale Divinity School, said he is totally unfamiliar with Pelosi's quotation.

Just like their personal US Constitution, which includes a right to an abortion and free health care.

Exactly!

There terms minister and creation do not appear together in any verse of the Bible.

When I read it to my hubby, SirKit, he said it didn't sound at ALL like Jewish Scripture, which is, after all, what the Old Testament is.

Just for fun I used ‘bible.com’ to do a word search - the phrase “act of worship” is found only in 2 passages - Romans (NIV) and 1 Samuel (The Message) - neither of which has anything to do with the quote Ms. Pelosi attributed to the Old Testament. I used every English translation and paraphrased version available.

It is sad... simply sad ... I would say it was evil, but I don’t think she is smart enough or aware enough to truly be capable of evil... so its just that... sad.

Sounds like she may have heard Matthew 25:31-46, THEN misinterpreted it to fit an agenda (and claimed “old” testament).

This passage from the old testament book of Romans - oh, right, New Testament...must’ve had a Howard Dean moment - talking about how God reveals Himself through creation, but certainly not that creation IS God...and certainly not the misdirection that Pelosi creates...this is Romans 1:18-25:

18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Why dignify some pro-abortion, anti-Christian feminist politician by quoting her biblical babblings. I hope she never admits again that she is a Catholic.

Also from the article:
Indeed, Cybercast News Service has learned that Pelosi has repeatedly used the quote:

-- In December 2005, in a Christmas message to the U.S. House of Representatives, Pelosi said: "Mr. Speaker, as we leave for this Christmas recess, let us say, 'God bless you' to the American people by voting against this Republican budget and statement of injustice and immorality, and let us not let the special interest goose get fat at the expense of America's children.

"The gentleman from Washington [state], Mr. McDermott, quoted the prophet Isaiah. And as the Bible teaches us, to minister to the needs of God's creation is an act of worship, to ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us. Let us vote no on this budget as an act of worship and for America's children."

-- On Feb. 8, 2007, in remarks before the U.S. House Science and Technology Committee, when it held hearings on global warming, she used the same quote, verbatim, as in her Earth Day release.

-- On April 6, 2007, in congressional remarks before the Easter recess: "In this Holy Week, we are reminded of these words in the Old Testament: 'To minister to the needs of God's creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.' We must move quickly to honor God's creation by reducing greenhouse gas pollution in the United States and around the world."

-- On April 25, 2007, in a speech to the League of Conservation Voters in Washington, D.C.: "We are now charging ahead to tackle one of humanity's greatest challenges yet - global warming. We will do this because we hold our children's future in our hands - not our grandchildren, or great-grandchildren, but our own children. "As it says in the Old Testament, 'To minister to the needs of God's creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.'"

-- On Oct. 22, 2007, in a television interview with PBS host Tavis Smiley, she used it in discussion of her roots, attributing the quote to the book of Isaiah: "I'm raised in a family in Baltimore, Maryland, my father was the mayor. He was in Congress when I was born. And we were devoutly Catholic, very patriotic. We love America. Devoutly Catholic, deeply patriotic, proud of our Italian American heritage, and in our case, staunchly Democratic.

"And that faith was related to our Democratic values. That is to say, the gospel of Matthew: 'When I was hungry, you gave me to eat.' You know, the least of our brethren. So that's an inspiration in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, Isaiah says, 'To minister to the needs of God's creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the god who made us.'"
Funny how well she has this ficticious bible verse down pat, and she continues to use it. Where on earth does it actually come from?

The best I can figure, this is a gross paraphrase of parts of the first chapter of Isaiah, where the LORD tells his worshipers that He would rather have his people focus on justice and mercy to others, than to sacrifice more animals to Him. But to apply this to global warming is absurd.

Judge for yourself. Do you think she's obliquely referring
to this passage?

Isaiah 1: 11-17
11 “ To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?”
Says the LORD.

“ I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
And the fat of fed cattle.
I do not delight in the blood of bulls,
Or of lambs or goats.
12 “ When you come to appear before Me,
Who has required this from your hand,
To trample My courts?
13 Bring no more futile sacrifices;
Incense is an abomination to Me.
The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies—
I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting.
14 Your New Moons and your appointed feasts
My soul hates;
They are a trouble to Me,
I am weary of bearing them.
15 When you spread out your hands,
I will hide My eyes from you;
Even though you make many prayers,
I will not hear.
Your hands are full of blood.
16 “ Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;
Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes.
Cease to do evil,
17 Learn to do good;
Seek justice,
Rebuke the oppressor;
Defend the fatherless,
Plead for the widow.

Couldn't a 5 second search on Bible Gateway answer the question?

No kidding - journalists are so dumb it's staggering. I see mis-quotes and non-quotes in media all the time. Heck, I'm a Sunday school teacher and in my lesson plan, I check EVERY verse that I THINK I know by heart - just in case I have it wrong. It does really only take seconds.

I suspect it's this scripture she is referring to:

Gem 1:28 "...Fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

Problem is Gore/Pelosi and company want the earth to rule over us...not us rule over the earth.

Hey Pelosi, sink your fangs into this scripture:

Genesis 9

God's Covenant With Noah

1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. 2 The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. 3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

Ezekiel 25:17

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

The really delicious irony is this: if you REALLY give a rip about the environment; if the cosmos — including all of the plants and fuzzy critters — REALLY matters to you, then you’ll be a committed Christian, wholeheartedly in support of God’s own ultimate plan for His creation.

You know, The Plane He lays out through the Apostle Paul in Romans 8:21, where it says that ...the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption...

“Slavery to corruption?” Yeah. Think “Eden”. As in, Death and decay weren’t part of the original design. So, rewind to before The Fall, and try to imagine a natural world devoid of death and decay. THAT is God’s plan. To liberate all of creation “into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.”

You want Giant Sequoias preserved forever??
You want to save the whales?
You want to protect vanishing speceis?
You want clean air?
You want climatological balance to be sustained?

Then you’d better bow the knee to the LORD Jesus Christ, because He’s the only One who has both a workable action plan AND the means to get it implemented.

Nobody — and nothing — else EVEN has a prayer.
