BAGHDAD (AP) -- Followers of hardline cleric Muqtada al-Sadr raised the stakes Sunday in the showdown with Iraq's government, refusing to disband their militia as the U.S. military reported an "uptick" of fighting in the Iraqi capital.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, meanwhile, assured visiting Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that he will not back down in his confrontation with Shiite militias, even as mortar shells fired from Shiite areas struck the U.S.-protected Green Zone.
In a sign of that resolve, Iraqi soldiers took control Sunday of the last stronghold of al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia in the southern city of Basra, where an Iraqi offensive last month triggered the current wave of Shiite fighting.
Al-Maliki, a Shiite, has demanded that al-Sadr disband his Mahdi Army, the country's biggest Shiite militia, or his followers will not be allowed to run in provincial elections this fall.

We should thank the MSM for their bogus reporting.
Think about it.
Sadr is in Tehran and only knows what is going on from the press. He doesn’t know what is really going on because the US MSM is keeping to its theme of this being a bad thing. So he keeps urging his troops on to their defeat...
At this point, like Hitler after ‘43, it would be a mistake to kill Sadr. His incompetance and gullability is to our advantage in eliminating his forces...
+1
It’s time to blow them to Kingdom Come, and let God sort them out.
I wonder when the day will come that the reporters stop the continuous, constant drumbeat of Shiite, Sunni, Kurd, etc.
I suppose that there was a time that those in the US were characterized in a similar way, but we’re beyond much of that now.
Retreat, then bring in the Apache's, F-16's, and M1A's and level Sadr City.
Gosh, am I out of line with my pragmatic attitude?
Well then die bozos.
And it would be nice to have everyone be peaceful, too, wouldn’t it.
Some things, however, are just not possible, or practical.
Everyone else knew it was wrong, too. But sometimes, "You've got to let them touch the paint."
No...
But, killing al-Sadr and ALL who stand with him is long overdue...
The thug "militia" will not stand down permanently, until they have been fed to the worms..
There have already been too many "cease fires" to save their asses from annihilation and too many "stand downs" to avoid death -- if these Jihadist bastards want war -- we should turn it on and not turn if off until they are ALL "martyrs" with their box of raisins.
That's what they tell us they want - we should accommodate them...
They need to kill that fat kcuf the same way the IDF killed that little Capuchin Monk looking dwarf they bagged a while back.
Why let a “holy man” hide behind the cloth while he’s killing ya?
Minor correction: it's time for the IRAQIS to kill al-Sadr. It'd be counterproductive if we did it.
Given that they're chasing his boys down and killing them, I think it's likely that Maliki's team won't be shy about it when they get the chance. Course, ol' Mookie knows that, which is why he's hiding in Iran.

That fkuc is hiding behind Iran not cloth.
Even if, by some miracle or good fortune, the Iraqis kill al-Sadr, the spin will be that Maliki is an agent of American design and the Americans are ultimately responsible for Mook's death.
al-Sadr must die. Plain and simple. By American hands, Iraqi, Mossad or a meteor strike.
I think you are right. The same way Iraq was the great bug light for the worst of AQ, when the enemy comes to you at the time of your choosing and design , .... it is a good step towards eliminating them.
See MEMRI.org for a description of the 72 virgins; it may drive you to consider converting.
Thanks...we will see what tomorrow brings....

before killing al-Sadr,
kill as many of his followers as possible
saw quick exchange on tonight's 'news' between US soldier and 'journalist' in Iraq - soldier explains; 'none of us blame the Iraqi soldiers that gave up their arms, they were shia, they come from the same area as the Sadr militia, they had been warned, if they continued to fight, their families would all be killed'.
