A 150-pound cougar was shot and killed Monday evening in the Roscoe Village neighborhood on Chicago's North Side, Chicago police said.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. in an alley near North Hamilton Avenue and West Roscoe Street, according to officials.

Police cornered the cougar in the back yard of Ben Greene, 39, who lives on the 3400 block of North Hoyne. Greene said he heard a volley of gunfire shortly before 6 p.m. as he was bathing his 10-month-old son. His wife, Kate, ran upstairs screaming with their 3-year-old son, and they all took cover in a back room

Why would anyone want to shoot an older woman looking for some young male companionship?

Let me guess, the cougar was up this far north and east because of global warming.

...they all took cover in a back room...

Something is missing here.

Ah-hah! That’s what it is. The man of the house did not arm himself with a firearm.

Ten bucks says it was an exotic "pet" introduced to the urban environment by its chicken sh*t "owner." More like "purchaser."

Poor cat. Scummy person.

Yeah, they can hang out in a tree or hidey hole during the day and come down at night to eat possums, raccoons and stray dogs and cats in the suburbs. We would never know they were about until an incident such as this occurrs. Cougar territory tends to be large - for females up to 6-miles in diameter, for males up to 10-miles.

We’ve had two come through here during the past 5-years.

It may have be a wild animal looking for a new range.

There have been a series of confirmed cougar sightings from southern Milwaukee county through northern Chicago. It may be the same animal. There was a sighting in the Waukegan area a few weeks ago.

About 10 years ago, I talked with a farmer in southwestern Wisconsin who was convinced there were cougars on his Vernon County farm. At the time, the DNR thought he was nuts, but he was an experienced hunter and tracker.

Since then, there have been many cougar sightings in southern Wisconsin.

Cougars have been spotted in IL over the years.
One Illinois wild Cougar was found dead in 2000 in Randolph County IL (about 85 miles south of St. Louis), so it known that IL has wild cougars but the population of them is low.

this website is not up to date because the webmaster passed away in 2007.
Cougar sightings in IL recorded up until 2005.

I grew up in Randolph county on a farm. Do you know where they found it? There was a time back in the late 60’s when we thought we heard a cougar scream in the middle of the night.

A cougar (Puma concolor) was recovered in the proximity of railroad tracks in Randolph County, Illinois (on land owned by Menard Prison) on July 15, 2000. A necropsy indicated that the cougar died from injuries it received when struck by a train. The animal appeared to be in good health prior to the accident, and no indications of captive rearing were observed. Genetic data were used to verify that the cougar was of North American origin and not an escaped or released cougar of South American origin. This is the first confirmed occurrence of a cougar in Illinois in over 100 years.

So... if this one turns out to be a wild one then it will be 2 confirmed wild cougars in IL since 2000. They are seen quite often here in Southern IL.

Though your reply was not to me, I might add that the area you described where the cougar was found is very desolate river bluff overlooking the Mississippi river, perfect habitat for a big cat.
