Bush Orders $200 Million Drawdown From Emergency Reserve to Help Nations Deal With Hunger

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush on Monday ordered the release of $200 million in emergency aid to help nations where surging food prices have deepened hunger woes and sparked violent protests.

The move comes one day after the president of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, called on the international community to act urgently in helping needy people and "put our money where our mouth is." Haiti, Egypt and the Philippines are among the countries facing civil unrest because of food prices and shortages.

Iraq had the Oil for Food program, we should institute the Food for Oil program.

It's not like the U.S. has been tightfisted in food aid, over $2 billion last year. Maybe the IMF can “put its money where its mouth is” when they sell their 400+ tons of gold.
Me? I'm all out of gold having just paid my taxes.

What small percentage of the $200 million will actually be used for food that actually gets delivered to the starving?

The elite think money magically turns into food when there is a shortage of food itself.

Sad, considering that it probably made you some money.

I thought it was based on "voluntary contributions". /s

“half oz., oz., stash”? Tell everyone you’re talking about gold, the metal not some cheap weed.

I think the guy is out of the loop as far as the American people are concerned.

That is a common affliction of most who tote the most powerful position in the world for close to 8 years.

The only one in my lifetime that wasn't inflicted IMO was Ronald Reagan, who didn't change attitude with such an increase of personal responsibility via power.

This will further drive up the price of food here at home.

We no longer count. We're just the dummies that subsidize these massive big gov give aways.

Anywhere from 50 cents to 100 million dollars I would estimate, however every little bit helps!

You should feel good about your confiscated labor for the betterment of humankind. /s

Sheesh, chill out, for crying out loud the next topic of issue will be that you will want to spend your hard earned labor on charity as you personally deem fit to do so.

Sounds kinda' fanatical. /major sarcasm

I don't know what happened, but he issued an EO that permitted what the Feds are doing today. Intervening in free markets. Maybe something we will never understand.

"Our policies are directly affecting the world IE CORN BEING USED AS FUEL. But rather than offering handouts we should just stop using ethanol."

Aren't our leaders brilliant. First we pay farmers subsidies in the billions to grow corn which is then used in ethanol. This drives up the price of food and now they are paying for food with our tax dollars. What a country!/s

Mean while payments subsidizing the making of ethanol out of food will be on time.

How stupid.

We as a nation have forgotten that there is a word that describes the condition where someone dictates through coersion how much of the fruits of their labor another is entitled to and how it will be spent. It’s called slavery.

It's the new world order, and it's brought to you by leftist Bill Clinton and "conservative" George W. Bush. We really should have taken up arms when we first saw Poppy Bush get all kissy-faced with Bill Clinton.

How else are politicians able to funnel cash flow and skim off the top for power and personal advancement?

The middleman always gets a cut.

Sadly enough, we as a nation, don't have the fortitude and/or common sense to stop it anymore.

It is all about money. I wonder how much of the billions in subsidies end up back in congress critters re-election coffers.
