Another ethnic slur has reared its ugly head from the golf world, and once again, it's from a golf announcer. Bobby Clampett, a former pro and CBS announcer, referred to Chinese golfer Wen-Chong Liang as "the Chinaman," on the air on Friday.
Clampett issued an apology, albeit a rather weak one, on the air: "It has been a privilege to be here with you the last two days describing action of the players. In describing the Asian player Wen-Chong Liang if I offended anybody please accept my sincere apolgies."
These are sensitive times in the golf world. Golf is trying hard to join the 21st Century and be part of he the diverse world, but there are times the old world, too often the Old South, shows up at the microphone. The Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman was suspended two weeks in January for saying that the Tour's young players who want to challenge Tiger Woods should "lynch him in a back alley."
On second thought, he should have said “orientalman.”
No... but a white man's an abomination for merely existing.
Don’t you be call’in me white!
This is stupid! Since when is it a SLUR to call anybody a MAN?...................
In response, he said, “Oh so solly!”
You would have thought that Jedd or Grandma would have taught him better. You never heard that kind of language around the mansion.
I read it as NAKED!..................
The defining moment; is Wen-Chong Liang a Chinaman?
Well, at least he didn’t say “Gook”...........
I believe the politically correct term is "Secret Asian Man", and yes, you must sing it to the tune of the song.
Chinaman is an old slur. I think it dates back to the coolies, late 1800s. Just as Oriental is considered a slur when applied to an Asian person, rather than the region.
Chinaman does not equal Frenchman, Irishman, Dutchman, etc. To make it equal it would be Chineseman.
This is all trivial stuff, but those are the correct answers. Personally, I find it humorous that anyone would worry about it. If Mr. Clampett gets any kind of reprimand, it would be complete injustice.
As to the fawning over Tiger Woods. It’s deserved. It has nothing to do with his ethnicity, he is simply the best, and quite possibly the best to ever pick up a golf club. Tiger has charisma, physical ability, and mental toughness. When I watch, I want to know what Tiger is up to.
Dutchman,okay. German,okay. Englishman,okay, Chinaman,slur?
What in the world is that?
Looks like a New York transvestite, who moved to Hollywood and dressed up like a caricature of someone Chinese.
Ick.
Hollywood is abhorrent.
“Chink” is a racial slur. “Slant” is a racial slur. “Chinaman” descibes a man from China. We are becoming a nation of hand wringing, bed wetting sissies.
Years and years ago, Panamanians thought calling us “gringos” was a good insult. They eventually found out we love being called “gringos” and that we call ourselves “gringos” because we love the term.
Americans are still referred to as “gringos” but not in the pejorative sense. Because we love the term, we took all the fun out of what was supposed to be an insult.
I had a wonderful cat named “Gringo.”
Sometimes he would escape and I would go down the street calling “Gringo, Gringo, Gringo.”
He has a brother named “Yankee”...and I am not making this up...when he would escape (he no longer escapes), I would call out “Yankee go home.”
The English stockbroker was trying to explain to his client, Mr. Chin, that his recent stock losses were due to the market . . . and things beyond control, like . . . fluctuations . . .
Mr. Chin’s eyebrows went up, he shouted, “Fluck you Blits!”
Fellow Freepers, I am half Asian and Chinaman is an ethnic slur. Please try to understand - I assume most of are not Asian or half - if you were at the receiving end of these slurs: Chinaman, Gook, Chink, Charlie Chan, Slanty Eyes - those words sting. My White Father never wanted to hear my complaints: He would always tell me to just brush it off, the whole world is not going to love you, the important thing is that Me and your Mother love you very much./Just Asking - seoul62.......
Ever been to a comedy show featuring black comics and Asian comics? I have, and both used the term “Whitey”, “Honkey”, “Cracker”, “Dorky White Dude”. Totally acceptable and as such, infuriating. Let’s put that in McCain’s “Fairness Doctrine”.
This gets press while voters sharing 1/2 brain are about to elect as racist a demon (Urkel Obama) as ever to run a campaign.
