But, a few of the republicans in congress with fight these appointments.
In the interests of bipartisanship (and because he his a 'maverick RINO') McCain will appoint people Teddy, Hillary!™ and Amoeba approve of.
The democrats will rubber-stamp them because even though McCain gets to announce the names, they are, after all, democrat appointees.
Republicans, in the name of 'party unity' will fall in line behind the 'McCain' appointees.
Never have I despaired so much for the future of our beloved country.

All these people staying home to “punish” the Republican party are only going to help the other - they can vote, not vote, crossover, writein whoever. they’ll be held just as accountable for that choice, too.

You absolutely do not know that is certain. You should know from experience what kind of judges the dims will appoint. I too fear for this country after you guys give them dim controlled supreme court decades to wreck our country.

Will they? Ginsburg and Breyer sailed through under Clinton, despite the Clarence Thomas fight. The last time Republicans played hardball with a judge that I can think of was back during LBJ's days with Abe Fortas as chief justice. Burger wasn't much better.
Another problem is that democrats hold a majority in the Senate, and will likely do so barring surprises, until 2012 when the class of 06 is up again. Not a lot of cards right now are in our favor.
I would like to think long term here, but with 6 justices over 70 once we get to January 2009, I can't risk that chance. That's why this Ron Paul voter of all people is going to hold his nose one more time like he did for Bush. At least Bush gave us Roberts and (with a push) Alito.
It would take at least 40 Republican Senators willing to fight.
Can't see that happening.
A Hillary or Obama presidency will destroy this country.

What you people should ask yourselves is: "If I am always giving ground on principle, settling for a fraction of a loaf conceded by my enemy, how long will it be before I have no bread at all?"

The Republican party is made up of people who vote in the Republican primaries.
Unfortunely, with a little help from Democrat crossovers plus a split conservative block, we have McCain.

This is a bit of a shock. I would have expected Tom to hang in like a bulldog. McCain actions and statements are the very antithesis of everything Tom believes in—this is incredible. One has to wonder if Tom was threatened in some way.
We're all sick of it. But in a two-party system it'll always be that way. Always.
I keep saying a McCain Presidency will mean that Conservatism will no longer be an active movement, but a theory.

With all the Republican leadership supporting McCain, most of the folks who at least considered themselves conservatives as well, as you state, no opposition whatsoever.
You are right to think in terms of Schwarzenegger and California. I’m not sure folks will understand that like we do. How about Arkansas under Bill Clinton. It was a one party state and we knew the problems with that. Every ‘conservative’ on this forum said they did. Now we’re off to turn the country into a one party nation.
