In an ABSOLUT World according to Mexico (Absolut responds to ad outrage)
Absolut Company Blog ^

Posted on 04/04/2008 1:51:32 PM PDT by mnehring

We have received many comments on an ad showing what an ABSOLUT world would look like from a Mexican point of view. We are sorry if we offended anyone. This was not our intention. We will try to explain. Though you may not agree, I hope you understand......

.....The In An Absolut World advertising campaign invites consumers to visualize a world that appeals to them -- one they feel may be more idealized or one that may be a bit "fantastic." As such, the campaign will elicit varying opinions and points of view. We have a variety of executions running in countries worldwide, and each is germane to that country and that population.

This particular ad, which ran in Mexico, was based upon historical perspectives and was created with a Mexican sensibility. In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues. Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal.

As a global company, we recognize that people in different parts of the world may lend different perspectives or interpret our ads in a different way than was intended in that market. Obviously, this ad was run in Mexico, and not the US -- that ad might have been very different.

We are sorry if we offended anyone

Yup. That's the typical non-apology apology. Weak. Jerks.

Russian potato vodka for me.

So I assume the ad in Japan will show a Greater East Asia co-Prosperity Sphere?

Here's the German one:

I wonder what the Navaho think of the Absolut ad. Or the Utes, or the Shoshone, or the -pais. How do the reconquista people justify their thinking?

>>Great move asshat .. I hope your sales go way up in Mexico ...cause they’re sure gonna be taking a hit on our side of the border

Let’s see - market in Mexico = small; market in US = huge.
Right, let’s go after the small market. We don’t need the huge market. Recipe for disaster.

Wonder how they will explain this to stockholders.

Can’t wait to see how they address American “sensibilities”.

"Nothing like the adventure of trying out all of the suggestions from the FReepers here. Keep ‘em coming!"

We own a new liquor store in a 'up-scale area' where expensive tastes are freely indulged.

Our most popular vodka's, not including ABSOLUT, are Ciroc, Three Olives, Grey Goose, Skyy - not necessarily in that order. Ciroc ($36.99) is the only vodka distilled from grapes. Our 20-somethings tend to migrate toward the UV and Smirnoff flavored vodka's (and lots of Red Bull).

It will be interesting to see what impact the ABSOLUT ad has on our sales in the next days and weeks. I'll also be alert to any comments from our customers about the ABSOLUT ad. Wow, this can't be good.

Whoever wrote "Mexican's drink Tequila" is absolutely (no pun) correct. They mostly buy Patron Silver and Jose Cuervo, fewer buy Hornitos. For beer lovers, they frequent Modelo and Corona.

In a Absolut world - there will be no Absolut -
Redefining history the way people want it to be means no Wodka for anyvun.

Other brands from the parent company- Pernod Ricard:

The ad was actually put out there by the previous owners of Absolut, V&S (Vin & Spirit).

Pernod Richard just acquired them in the past week for $8.3 billion.

Linky Thing

Their timing is teh suck

“Thanks for the list! Do you have a link, please.”

It wasn't Pernod Richard that ran the ad ... although their recent deal with V&S isn't looking as good as it did when they closed it ...
