Living with staggering violence in South L.A.
Los Angeles Times ^ | March 28, 2008 | Scott Gold, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

Hines has pleaded not guilty to a series of felonies that could bring him a life prison term. Police are still searching for the intended victims, who have not come forward.

Hines is a Four Trey Crip, said Los Angeles Police Lt. Paul Stalker, commanding officer of detectives in the department's Newton Division, which covers 10 square miles of South Los Angeles, a shifting mosaic of gang territories.

The gunman's intended victims, investigators believe, were probably Bloods, perhaps members of a branch called AFC, or "All for Crime." Generally, Bloods control the east side of Central and Crips the west. Latino gangs -- 38th Street, Playboys, Barrio Mojados -- are sprinkled on both sides. The avenue is a spine of tension and, routinely, staggering violence.

"You've just got to keep moving," Pruitt said. "The strong survive."

The shooting shocked the city, but around here, most say it was an aberration only in the sense that the outside world noticed.

Many residents say they can predict everything that will happen now. There will be community meetings, calls for reform -- for jobs programs, mentoring programs, after-school programs. Solemn promises will be made. Police will put more cars on the streets. Violence will ebb. And then, before real change can take root, the city's attention will begin to drift, and a new cycle will begin.

The last paragraph tells it all

"I don't ask questions," she said. "I don't call the police." No one does, she explained, not so much because the police are feared but because you will become a target yourself if you are known to have ratted out a criminal."

So much for Special Order 40.

The people who live in these places are very tolerant of high crime. That's the main problem. The police will always be shackled because the local culture encourages people to not cooperate (even though there may be witness protection programs in place) under any circumstances.

Most cities could end gang violence tomorrow if the people elected leaders who would throw everything they had at the gangs. But until they do... it would probably wise to stock up on flak jackets.

Not surprisingly, gangs fester in the inner-cities and not in the countryside, where we could get a good shot at them.

If they would end the “war on freedom” they have nothing to fight over and most of the gang violence would disappear.

Seems to me that the internet would be perfect for this sort of thing - set up an anonymous tip site, and let people give tips anonymously.

Of course, if the average IQ of the potential tipsters is down around 85 [which it will be], then it's gonna be mighty difficult for them to figure out how to navigate a website and enter data into it [seeing as how they will almost certainly be functionally illiterate].

And, quite frankly, with AA, I doubt that the average IQ of the officers assigned to investigate the cases will be a whole lot greater than 85, either.

That is, until the families of gang-bangers, and to a lesser extent, their victims, all decide to move out to the country to "escape the violence."

Of course, that means they bring the same mentality that led to many inner cities becoming free-fire zones right out to the country.

And they vote Democrat...

"There will be community meetings, calls for reform -- for jobs programs, mentoring programs, after-school programs."

That's the solution, more 'Programs'. /sarc

Of course, all these programs will be run by the local community race-pimps and at least their standard of living will be improved.

As Newt said in a recent speech, it is an intersection of bad culture and bad government. The left has always encouraged lawlessness by denying the legitimacy of the law. They encourage bad culture by denying the legitimacy of Western culture.

As a result, you get areas such as this and Detroit.

True but since so many politicians (and cops) are corrupt and part of the drug/prostitution/gambling hierarchy in the first place that will never happen.

I think you’ll find that gangs, especially Latin types like MS13, are growing in areas you’d call countryside, as they follow the path of migratory agriculture workers.

That's assuming they have access to a computer. I suspect most don't have one in their homes either because they can't afford one or homeowners fear it will be one more reason for criminals in a high crime area to break into their homes.

We are probably headed toward the “no go” zones of some European countries. The police will simply withdraw from these areas and they will be “self policed” according whatever code by the gangs themselves with justice being determined by the strongest.

And they could end all this tomorrow by decriminalizing drugs.

Actually, and I know it would be very un-PC, I would imagine a study of the incidence of this lawlessness and local corruption would find that areas/cities of majority Black populations are where this type of Societal breakdown is centered.

Unfortunately, it's a fact that few want to face.

The local programs are usually run by Community Action agencies, a creation of LBJ.

A perfect example is University Of North Carolina Student Body President Eve Carson gunned down by a gang banger in the street just a mile from campus.

I was thinking they could use a computer at work, or at the public library.

But, again, people with IQ's down in the 80's & 70's tend not to have stable employment, nor do they tend to frequent public libraries.
