There was a time when not having sex consumed a very small part of Janie Fredells life, but that, of course, was back in Colorado Springs. It seemed to Fredell that almost no one had sex in Colorado Springs. Her hometown was extremely conservative, and as a good Catholic girl, she was annoyed by all the fundamentalist Christians who would get in her face and demand, as she put it to me recently, You have to think all of these things that we think. They seemed not to know that she thought many of those things already. At her public high school, everyone, literally everyone, wore chastity rings, Fredell recalled, but she thought the practice ridiculous. Why was it necessary, she wondered, to signify youre not doing something that nobody is doing?
And then Fredell arrived at Harvard. Sitting in a Cambridge restaurant not long ago, she told me that people back home called it godless, liberal Harvard. Some discouraged her from going, but Fredell went anyway, arriving in the fall of 2005. She wanted to study government, she said, maybe become a lawyer, and she knew that people take you more seriously as a Harvard student.
From the start, she told me, she was awed by the diversity of the place, by the intensity, by the constant buzz of ideas. There were so many different kinds of people at Harvard, most of them trying to change the world, and everyone trying to figure out what they thought of everyone else. Harvard really puts pressure on you to define who you are, Fredell said, and she loved everything about Harvard, except the sex.

Sex, Harvard, I’m confused.
With one in four adults having herpes (and who knows what other VDs), it seems only wise, prudent, and smart to avoid sex with anyone until married and until your partner has been tested to show they have no sexual diseases. In this regard, abstinence is the only thing that makes sense.
You have to check your brain before you go to Harvard Yard!
I think we’re going to see evolution in action. Those who cannot abstain are being infected with diseases that can kill and do leave sterile. Those who aren’t sleeping around will be able to have children, and will probably have more children in the long run.
I liked the ending the best.
An excellent article, I read the whole thing(6 pp.) straight through. Really gave a fair shake to the abstinence promoters at Harvard—in a NYTimes article no less!
No Sex, Colorado Springs conservative?!!! Are there 2 Colorado Springs? The one I know anything about is home to CU and may be one of the most liberal places on earth as well as home to Ward Churchill.
Am I confused here?
He went to another prestigeous Universtiy and graduated top of his class. He is now moving up in the military faster than anyone I have ever seen. He is now a Colonel and there is no doubt in my mind he will make at least a two star general. Maybe even higher.
He is a White Christian male from a non wealthy or politically prominent family. No way he was getting into Harvard.
Ditto
It was a New York Times Magazine article. They just make it up so it fits their stereotrype.
Seriously how does masturbation lead to these problems? We no longer believe it makes you go blind.

The liberals will fight tooth and nail to stop this--not only because it interferes with hedonism, not only because it bids fair to restore the family and interrupt the Gramscian attack on America, but because in teaching women to control their own bodies *before* sex, these students completely undercut the arguments for abortion.
"It's my body and I have the right to do with it what I want" actually *does* apply to abstinence -- and if you can maintain that attitude and make it stick, then the necessity of abortion will be very rare indeed. You know, the proverbial 'rape and incest' exclusion which was used to get the camel's nose into the tent.
Cheers!
Oral/Anal masturbation? Are you triple jointed or do you have pix for the uninitiated?
Ideally sexuality brings you closer to your mate. Masturbation usually involves unhealthy or unrealistic fantasies and often pornography. This can lead to addictions to porn or even fetishes. While not as dangerous as real promiscuous sex with numerous partners, it is not the best.
Colorado Springs and Boulder are two different (very different) places.
One is the Sodom of CO, and one is the “Christian Mecca”.
R U Sik?
Excuse me?
