Mugabe warned of Kenya-style revolt
The Guardian ^ | March 28 2008 | Chris McGreal

Zimbabwe's opposition says it will bring the government to its knees with Kenya-style mass protests if President Robert Mugabe carries out extensive plans to rig tomorrow's presidential and parliamentary elections. But Mugabe has vowed to use the army to crush any demonstrations and warned Zimbabweans not to waste their votes on opposition candidates who would never be allowed to take power.

Mugabe, 84, would struggle to extend his 28-year rule in a clean election, amid widespread hunger, mass unemployment, 100,000% inflation and a currency that devalues so fast that the few people with jobs are paid in billions of Zimbabwe dollars. Election monitoring groups say the ruling Zanu-PF party has printed millions of extra ballots, intimidated rural voters by threatening their food supply, permitted police into polling booths to "help" voters, and rigged the electoral roll.

Among those registered to vote is Desmond Lardner-Burke, who was born a century ago and as justice minister in the white Rhodesian government jailed Mugabe as a terrorist. Lardner-Burke died years ago in South Africa.

"The lesson from 2002 is we didn't plan for after the vote. Everyone stayed at home and said we will go to the courts. What happened in Kenya was they knew there would be fraud and they were ready," he said. "We will be out on the streets celebrating when the polls close. It can turn into a protest easily. Zimbabweans are angry, they are desperate, they are ready to protest. It's the tipping point we are planning for."

Mugabe told an election rally this week that a vote for the opposition would be wasted because it will "never be allowed to rule this country", and he threatened to put down any Kenya-style protests. "That will never happen here. Never ever," he said. "We have enough security forces."

There's no doubt Mugabe and his ZANU-PF thugs will "win" the elections and stay in power. They knowing a starving populace is in no condition to confront them.

Dictators want the imprimatur of legitimacy that a constitutional facade and periodic elections provide. Nothing changes of course - but it makes them look like more than brute thugs to the outside world. Of course true power is based on brute force - not on the verdict of the consent of the governed.

Protesting will only get these unfortunate people killed. If they get organized and are prepared to fight for freedom they can effect a change. Zimbabwe only has 32k troops, perhaps 60k if you count paramilitary thugs. Mugabe can only hold power through fear, ignorance and disorganization of the opposition.

If they have not been storing up arms since the last election then that would count as all three. Mugabe has made enemies of some pretty powerful and wealthy people in Zimbabwe. I would think they could have received some support from a few of those individuals.

Sure. He will probably "win" by an inflated total and his party will secure a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Mugabe is Zimbabwe's "eternal" President. He will die in office.

Mugabe, another wonderful gift from Dhimmi Carter. Along with the Ayatollah and the loss of the Panama Canal. What a disaster he was!

Keep this in mind in November... elections have consequences, sometimes for decades!

Mugabeast needs to die and soon.

If there's no one in Rhodesia capable of taking the animal down, surely someone with ties of interest in the country could hire an assassin or a team of mercs to butcher it.

A Zim election is just a bit of theatre so that they can tell the world that they are a democracy.

Nobody is buying it any more.

America is a great place for blacks to live. Better than 99% of Africa. Seems like the worst racist are over in Africa. You should see how blacks are treated there....by other blacks. And much of the time it is for tribal reasons
